Kevin and Elizabeth Shatz won’t be winning any Parent of the Year awards anytime soon. These two monsters in sheep’s clothing spanked and beat their adopted 7-year-old daughter Lydia for seven hours, to her death. Lydia’s injuries, a type of tissue damage, were so severe that they appeared consistent with those of victims of earthquakes and bombings.

It all went down for in the family’s Paradise, California home.

The Shatz practiced a barbaric parenting technique on the rise within Christian Fundamentalist families, which teaches that in order to raise happy, well-adjusted children, it’s necessary to beat them. Often. The basic premise,”To spare the rod will spoil your child,” says it all. (And by “all”, we mean that these parents are just awful.)

Kevin Schatz has pleaded guilty to torture and murder, and will spend the next 22 years in prison. His wife Elizabeth will serve at least 12. At their court hearing, Lydia’s 11-year-old sister Zakiah asked her parents, “Why did you adopt her? To kill her?”

spare the rod spoil the child does NOT mean physical beatings. shepherds used their rods or staffs to guide their sheep and it gave the sheep something to feel secure with when they looked up to see their surroundings. having lost a child of my own 9 years ago due to my ex husbands violence, i know the pain of losing a child. i hope these rot in hell.

This just breaks my heart… That poor girl, and her poor siblings… What horrible and cruel parents those people are to do something like that. There is nothing a child does that warrents that kind of punishment. Those “parents” deserve to rot in prison… I think people are missing the TRUE point of Christianity, which is “supposed” to be about LOVING your neighbor, not condemning them for the things that they have done… This is truly beyond sad…

There is a lot about religion that I don’t agree with at all, enough that I myself will never be religious, but I truly believe there will always be sick people in the world with or without religion. At its best, religion can be a good thing for people who interpret it properly. Whether it is *intended* for healthy interpretation… is up for debate. I often think it’s not. However, It is the exception, not the rule, that religious people do terrible things using religion as an excuse. I’ll concede that it can provide a convenient excuse for those looking for one. That being said, we ought not condemn religion too much, because people who want an excuse for their awful behavior, or their good behavior, will find one with or without religion.

I shit you not, some of these Christians would get an F in all the Theology classes I had to take in private school. That was one of the passages we talked about and like everyone says, the rod has NOTHING to do with beating. TEACHING, damn it, TEACHING. I got spanked, but only when I acted a fool. It was RARE. Other than that, my family talked to me and taught me things. They nurtured good behavior and reprimanded extreme foolishness. I was treated like a human being and ALL of them were devout Christians. Aunt is a First Lady, Uncle is a Pastor, Grandfather was a Deacon….etc. This is SICK.

It’s religious loons like this that complain about gays being parents.

That statement, “To Spare the rod will spoil your child”, doesn’t mean you have the right to beat your child (especially until they die). It means to strongly and SAFELY guide your children into a well adjusted, well rounded adult hood. It’s to help them become productive members of a society (seeing as it originally pertained to shepherds, not parents) and to help them realize, when they reach adult hood, that behaviors like that aren’t acceptable. blamiing a book someone else wrote is a bunch of bull!! did you notice that none of the biological children were not said to have any injuries. these people are sick ! i am a christian and i know that you do not beat your children. the term rod is not to be used as a wepon, it is to be used as a measurement something to be accountable to not litiraly a rod. that is the problem with people you do realize that people are going to do whatever they want God has no control over that what the heck do you think free will is a joke.
