Rick Santorum Claims Gay Marriage Caused the Recession

It was gays, and not this fetching lavender and pink number, that led to the recession.

Rick Santorum is clearly eating fruit from a very different morality tree than the rest of us. Dare we say it, we think his might be rotting the poor chap’s brain.

Irresponsible mortgage and insurance companies preying upon the most impoverished homeowners in our country? Bankers and Wall Street financial specialists robbing Americans blind? Corporations refusing to raise the average worker’s dollar, even as CEO’s award themselves billions in annual bonus money?

No, no. None of these things led the the economic collapse of our nation, and the world at large. It was the gays, of course!

Santorum: Letting the family break down and in fact encouraging it and inciting more breakdown through this whole redefinition of marriage debate, and not supporting strong nuclear families and not supporting and standing up for the dignity of human life. Those lead to a society that’s broken.

If you think that we can be a society that kills our own, and that disregards the family and the important role it plays, and doesn’t teach moral values and the important role of faith in the public square, and then expect people to be good, decent and moral when they behave economically, if you look at the root cause of the economic problems that we’re dealing with on Wall Street and Main Street I might add, from 2008, they were huge moral failings. And you can’t say that we’re gonna take morality out of the public square, morality out of our schools, God out of our schools, and then expect people to behave decently in a country that requires, capitalism requires some strong modicum of moral consciousness if it’s gonna be successful.

I guess life was just better back in the day when his type suppressed what they deemed immoral, and they could hide the impoverished, and women and minorities didn’t vote, or had very few rights at all. Of course, then you had to deal with a life-span of 60 years, a couple of world wars (which were probably still the gays, the jews, the blacks, and even the womens fault – never their own) but life was better. Since the gays started getting rights socieity has just plummeted! Tsk, tsk, tsk. Oh what he’d do for another old fashioned world war and repression again.

Did any of you actually listen to the recording of what he said, or just buy into the headline posted by a site that very clearly states its bias?
His point (which he states quite clearly if you actually listen to the recording) was that in a society where morality is no longer held as being worth anything its ridiculous to expect people to behave morally, including those whose immoral behavior can/did have major repercussions on the economy. He named homosexuality and abortion (over 30 million killed every year) and the major efforts of some to remove mention of God from schools as symptoms of this continuous moral decline.
Considering the rampant greed and immorality that was necessary for the type of banking and business decisions that led to this recession he makes a good point. The only reason you’re bashing him (and read the comments, because yeah, bashing is what you’re doing, including making fun of the man’s clothes) and that this site is targeting him (and yeah that’s what that headline does) is because you disagree with his opinion regarding the moral implications of homosexuality.
Nowhere did he say that gay marriage caused the recession. He said that it is a symptom of moral decline. And moral decline was what he said caused the recession.
Do I agree with him 100%? No. But he’s certainly not the nutjob that everyone else here is trying to make him look like. You wouldn’t want others to do this to you and your perspective, you should be fair to others perspectives too and represent them accurately. Especially you, Kevin Farrell, for writing such an inaccurate article.

considering Santorum’s past statements regarding homosexuality and his application of there being a causation between the rise in homosexuality and a moral decline that led to the recession, I don’t think this article (or most of the comments on it) are anywhere near out of line. What I find reprehensible is that you are attempting to defend this man. This is a man who strongly advocates against an entire population of people simply because they are gay.

His whole argument relies on the presumption that there has been some sort of “moral decline,” that is characterized by “turning away from god” and accepting terrible sins like being born gay (whatEVER are those babies THINKING?).

The historical pattern is much different. Historically, at some point, for political reasons, someone in politics or the church decides we’ve fallen on a more sinful time than before (which is, of course, b.s.) and something MUST BE DONE! The “something” always involves shunning and persecuting and violence and prison and execution of the innocent parties by the guilty and just a big, jolly old Cru-sade!

Then there really IS a surge of sin–perpetrated by god’s minions against people minding their own business, just trying to get through the day. It’s an era in history, and every time it comes around, it’s just as damned ugly as the last time. This one will be a doozy.

I’ve been following Mr. Sanctimonious, I mean, Santorum, for a number of years now (even before he became synonymous with that frothy mix he seems to spew from his piehole), and yes, I listened to the whole thing. And my interpretation of it (and I’m pretty damn good at parsing language…law degree and all that) is that he blames, among other things, the legalization of gay marriage (which to Santorum’s warped psyche represents some sort of “Fall of the Roman Empire” level of moral decay…as if) for the economic decline of our nation. I call horseshit. Our economic decline can be directly traced to two sources: the mindblowlingly expensive, decade-plus long war in the Middle East, and the deliberate fleecing of America by corporate robber barons via Wall Street. As for his mental stability, I’m not qualified to diagnose psychiatric problems. However, I do have a fully functional red flag system for nutjobbery, and buddy, every time Santorum opens his gaping maw, it’s red alert time.

I am an Atheist, who has much better morals than many of the so-called Christians running government and the coroporations. I have also been married for 30 years and respect my sister’s right to be married to her wife. They are also moral, upstanding citizens of this country. It is the bigoted, hypocritical, and greedy, some of whom are so-called Christians, who are the cause of the decay of our society.

It isn’t homosexuality or taking “god” out of public schools (where it doesn’t belong in the first place) that teaches kids to steal and cheat, it’s their heterosexual parents, many of whom are so-called Christians.

Yes, clearly Santorum believes homosexuality is immoral but what he DOES NOT say anywhere in the acutal quote is that gay marriage caused the recession. He doesn’t even imply it! He says
that immorality was the cause for the recession, and then he argues for
the decline of morality in our culture by pointing toward the rise in abortion and homosexuality. In no way did he say that homosexuality caused the recession, he’s simply saying it’s a
symptom of immorality. Big big difference. One is rationally defensible
(though I’d say oversimplified), one is not.

It’d be like someone making the headline “Bill J claims that 90% of accidents
are caused by people not using Turn signal” when what I really said was
that bad driving causes 90% of accidents, and the fact that so many
people don’t bother using turn signals is evidence of how rampant bad
driving is.Just a completely inaccurate representation in the headline and the article of the man’s actual opinion. Intentionally inflammatory and inaccurate.

Yes morality is a huge part of business behavior. Yes Santorum has a point about that. What he fails to realize is that it has nothing to do with a lack of “Christian Morality”, rather a complete lack of any morality. I have strong morals about honesty, strong convictions about what is ok and what is not…. I’m also an Agnostic bordering on Atheist homo furry kinkbag too… But I still know what’s right and what is wrong. I know how to conduct myself in public, with honesty, and in a manner that doesn’t overtly effect other people. People who think God is required, that their comfortable definition of family is necessary for the world to function insult the very core of who I am. It saddens me, moreover, because honestly, people who use Religion as a tool, like Santorum, are immoral in doing so. They do not use it to guide their lives so much as they use it to try to guide the lives of others, sometimes with violent and appalling results. It is a sickness where, by digging in on what they believe to be the moral high ground, they think they get to say what is right and wrong. In all truth, no one is perfect, we all have our flaws, and no one is ever 100% right about much of anything. Love, live and let live. I only wish people like Santorum could understand that. Maybe, someday, he will… but that would be miraculous.

In recent memory, gay Americans have been blamed for Hurricane Andrew, Hurricane Katrina, floods, earthquakes, the 9/11 attacks, and now they are being blamed for what run amok anti-government-regulation Republicans and fraudster Wall Street 1-percenters did to our economy and the rest of the world. And most, if not all, of these righteous anti-government-regulation conservative fraudsters, both politicians and corporate CEOs, who are solely responsible for the economic catastrophe of 2007/2008, are married, man and woman, with 2.3 children (except maybe for those who’ve been married and divorced multiple times, still man-woman, but having a whole lot of kids after having had multiple spouses).

rick is right on. if we, as a country, choose to break Gods law, then we will pay the price. Gods law is much more than being gay, it also includes adultery, pre marital sex, drug abuse, cheating, lying, stealing, killing, using Gods name in vain, and many more. the price we pay can be seen in many ways: the divorce rate is at a low of 50 per cent, the suicide rate for teenagers is skyrocketing, kids are killing parents and vice a versa, gangs are rampant, and yes, the banks are robbing us. we all need the Lord. Wasn’t all this stuff brewing under the hat of George W. Bush, the most moral, pro-life, anti-gay president of our generation? The real estate, mortgage, insurance scam, and speculation bubble started inflating in the early and mid-2000s and finally blew in late 2007-2008 with a real estate crash, Wall St. collapse and the Great Recession. Bush was the one who instituted the TARP and presided over a collapsed American economy and destroyed American dream. The Obama Anti-Christ has slowly and grimly been pulling us out of it, but the damage has been done. A recession this deep may take more than a decade to claw out from, no matter who the president is, especially since Wall St. banks and investment firms are still using their money for speculating instead of investing. We should have nationalized the banks as a condition of TARP while we could. They said they had to be bailed out so that they could use their money to loan out as credit and investment. Instead, they’re still using it for the risky kind of speculation with other people’s money that caused the crash to begin with. They have loaned virtually no money out for new investments on small businesses, construction or home building that would grow the economy. They’re sitting on record amounts of cash and it’s all been tied up in the same irresponsible practices that caused the crash to begin with. That, not gays or lack of “family values” is what is causing America to decline.
