A Few Words on Gay Marriage, Gay Lunch and Gay Parking

I stopped visiting the  365Gay website after a discussion with one of the editors on this topic. They use Gay Marriage predominantly in their articles. When I, and others, asked why they still used this second class term, when almost every other gay publication, blog, site and organization uses marriage equality, he told us he was “tone deaf to terminology,” (A journalist) and that the New York Times uses it as well. (?) When I sent him a a lengthy, heartfelt email discussing my 25 year relationship, our travails as a bi national couple, our struggles, our joys and tears, etc. and why the phrase grates, and said exactly this, that we’re married, not gay married and deserve the right to not be segregated once again as we gain equality, especially within our own community, regardless of what the New York Times does. He responded that if my entire happiness depended on the use of a single word I had more problems to deal with than gay marriage. Sigh. Right over his head. My brother has been “married” five times in the 25 years my husband and I have been together and no one has EVER suggested they were anything else or downgraded them, even the ones that lasted only months. We own a house, not a gay house. We own a car, not a gay car. We’re married, not gay married. Far more married than most heterosexuals I know.
