Madonna has kept busy this week promoting W.E., her latest directorial effort. The film, intended to be a drama, has been so poorly received by audiences that is has mutated itself into a comedy of sorts, with Italian cinemafiles at the Venice Film Festival drawing international attention for laughing uncontrollably during much of the film. Eek, girl!

Surely this is the reason for M’s surly disposition when asked about Lady Gaga by French publication LeSoir?

On weekends, shooting the romance from Wallis Simpson through the eyes of a contemporary young woman admiring, Wally. We could see the look of your fans about you. Even that of Lady Gaga?

We can safely assume that the gender dig at the Mother Monster is merely a translation hiccup, but the rest of the statement is pretty hard to misinterpret.

The “gender dig” is in fact a mistranslation. “Ses” is the conjugation of “son” which can mean either “his” or “hers.” The gender and number of the conjugation depends upon the object (in this case “obsessions”) rather than the subject (Lady Gaga).

Using google translate as the ultimate source on language and not assuming that was a translating error/not fact-checking elsewhere is a way to be stamped as shoddy gossip reporting…

Errr, this should be a more appropriate and less nuanced translation from Fradonncais — also, less bitchy and more Madonna-y: My portrayal of Wally is the result of trying to learn the truth about Wallis Simpson, about finding out that not everything is black and white, true or false. Life is a gray area and nobody can simply put someone in a box. As far as Lady Gaga, I can’t comment on the media’s obsessively trying to tie her to me because I don’t know if the comparisons are something profound or simply superficial.

It’s not a dig on Lady Gaga directly, it’s a dig on “why the heck do people keep asking me about Lady Gaga”. If Madonna didn’t like Lady Gaga, she wouldn’t take her biggest potshot in french.

i think the translation would be more accurate if the context was much clearer. I am a conversational french speaker and even with my french grammar and language guides, it still seems to be up for interpretation.
