50 Cent snuggles up to The Game in happier times.

We’ve stayed out of it until now, but every other gay blog (and TMZ) has been obsessed with week with rapper The Game’s are-they-homophobic or aren’t-they-homophobic comments about HIV, black men, and gay men on the down low “tricking” women into contracting HIV.

From where we’re standing, the arguments on both sides are largely nonsensical. We get the impression that The Game is misinformed and muddling two separate issues; rising HIV rates within the black community and the soundbite-friendly, but largely hot air topic of straight men leading secret gay lives on the side.

Frankly, if the increase in HIV infections among black women were due to a small group of closeted gay men secretly infecting them, then the issue here would still be that of black women practicing unsafe sex – and a whole freaking lot of it at that. Saying the down low is to blame for an entire demographic’s unsafe sex practices is irresponsible, and a swan song that we have zero interest in continuing to proselytize. Plus, it’s just bad math. The argument here breaks down to gay men having sex with (lots and lots and lots) more women than straight men do.

But rappers outing one another in a Twitter war? We’re all over that!

the point of the DL is well taken however ridiculous it might seem that gay men deliberately trick women into sleeping with them, (in fact the inverse seems more likely) I think there may be some truth in what he’s saying. not being black nor having many black friends my self, I’m not the best authority on the issue, but it is my impression that homosexuality is more frowned upon in the black community than it is in say mainstream (read white with the exception of WASP) culture. Thus men who may actually be bi or gay but afraid of identifying as such due to sociological “norms” and the repercussions for so identifying, end up sleeping with both men and women, which in and of its self (IMHO) is not necessarily bad. at least not in the case of bi-sexuals (however it is sad for those who don’t actually want to sleep with women but force them selves to because of societal pressure and sad for the women they sleep with). The real issue here is safe sex and an open and honest approach to sexual health. Everybody SHOULD be practicing safer sex if they are sexually active but we don’t always; so failing that EVERYBODY who sleeps with more than one person has an ethical obligation to get tested and inform their (potential) partners of their STD status. Most people spreading STDs are those who don’t know that they’re infected. Bearing all this in mind, statements like “…some of you dirty dick straight niggas…” are not productive in regards to sexual health. clearly the main intent of this sentiment is to shame infected persons, with the aim that they thus abstain from having sex. but the effect is the opposite. Because there is so much shame and stigma surrounding STDs, people for fear of said shame, rather than abstaining from sex, avoid getting tested because they are afraid of the results and are therefore more likely to increase infection rates unknowingly….

I think there is absolutely truth in this. Maybe these men aren’t consciously “tricking” women into sleeping with them, but I’ve heard of cases where a husband is on the DL, contracts HIV (or any other STD) and brings it home to his unsuspecting wife. That’s not necessarily a “gay” thing, though, it’s a cheating thing. It happens when one partner thinks they’re in a monogamous relationship when they’re really not.

There are two factors that separate the cases of cheating: 1) “Down low” black gay men are more likely to cheat on their long-term girlfriends/wives due to dissatisfaction. 2) Closeted gay men in general are more likely to practice unsafe sex because of ignorance and a “get this over with” feeling of paranoia of not wanting to be caught in the act.

Let’s not forget that HETERO black women are now one of the groups with the fastest growing HIV rate and it takes two to tango, meaning they are getting it from men who are also not practicing safe sex.
