‘L Word’ Actress Leisha Hailey Kicked Off Southwest Plane for Kissing Girlfriend

Actress Leisha Hailey has been tweeting her angry little heart out following a flagrantly homophobic display of discrimination at the hands of Southwest Airlines today. Hailey and her girlfriend were removed from the cabin of a Southwest plane for daring to…GASP!…kiss onboard.

I have been discriminated against by @SouthwestAir. Flt. attendant said that it was a "family" airline and kissing was not ok.

A representative for Southwest rushed to put out a statement for the airline. “Initial reports indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive. Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all Customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender. The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight. We regret any circumstance where a passenger does not have a positive experience on Southwest and we are ready to work directly with the passengers involved to offer our heartfelt apologies for falling short of their expectations”

To which Hailey responded:

I’m not trying to say that it was okay for that flight attendant to be discriminatory, but it isn’t fair to say don’t fly on Southwest just because of this incident. If you’re following by those rules then you can’t fly on any airline because at some point or another they have been discriminatory towards people. Rather then pit blame on the company, pit blame on the person, after all, how was Southwest supposed to know that she was a homophobic bigot. It’s not really something a company asks during an interview.

And how are they going to prevent people from lying? Some people are naturally terrible prejudice people. Company’s can’t ask a white person “Are you or have you ever been in the KKK or like to discriminate against black people?” So they can’t ask about homophobia much to my dismay.

I have seen straight people asked to stop making out on airlines. It doesn’t matter whether your straight or gay, it makes others uncomfortable to see two people constantly kissing in close quarters with others.

Me and my lover don’t feel the need to lock lips when out in public (yes, I’m gay). We have been known to give one another a quick peck in public, but why would anyone need to make out in public? Im sure she would have complained if she saw straight people making out on the plane.

Leave this kind of affection for places where it belongs.

I’m totally with you, there is no need to be overly affectionate in public – it is gross and rude regardless of sexual preference. Despite the above argument to the contrary, simply choosing not to participate in PDA does not inherently label one insecure, but rather establishes a sense of confidence and a level of maturity. However I don’t for a second believe that Leisha was asked to stop because she was being ”excessive”, clearly she was offending the Homophobic Flight Attendant, who assumed that her ”power” would be sufficient enough to “put a stop” to the ”offensive” behavior. Consider the fact that SWA claims that “many” reports indicated that the display was “excessive” – which really means that at least one other homophobic person complained. Come on, if it were a straight couple kissing, wouldn’t most of us just look away, even if we were uncomfortable? I can assert, with a decent level of certainty, that this event had everything to do with the fact that the PDA was between two people of the same sex – otherwise it would be a non-issue.

Southwest Airlines had better be able to back up their allegations. Unless Ms. Hailey and her lady love had their ‘excessive’ behavior well-documented, the flight crew may have awkward questions to answer. We need more details, and not just the saucy ones.

The statement said the kissing was “excessive”, suggesting that maybe they were having a serious make-out session. A kiss is fine but public spaces really aren’t appropriate for deep kissing. If that’s the case, I have to side with Southwest.

The airplane is a little to close and uncomfortable to be making out, even in first class. She probably gave her gf a quick kiss before the actual flight of the plane for good luck & a makeout session to me is groping, tongue, & lasts for more than 2 mins. Simple kissing is usually a couple of quick pecks in sequential order.
