Obama Knocks GOP for Booing Gay Soldier

You just keep giving us reasons to back you, Mr. President! Keep it up!

Oh Mr. President, can you do any more for the LGBT community (other than the numerous things you already have)? Apparently, yes, yes he can.

At Obama’s first fundraiser in San Jose, California, the president took aim at GOP candidates and some recent (shameful) debate behavior.

“Some of you here may be folks who actually used to be Republicans but are puzzled by what’s happened to that party, are puzzled by what’s happening to that party. I mean, has anybody been watching the debates lately? You’ve got a governor whose state is on fire denying climate change,” he said, to applause. “It’s true. You’ve got audiences cheering at the prospect of somebody dying because they don’t have health care and booing a service member in Iraq because they’re gay.

“That’s not reflective of who we are,” Mr. Obama said. “This is a choice about the fundamental direction of our country. 2008 was an important direction. 2012 is a more important election.”

Zing! Get it, Obama!

I don’t know how everyone else feels, but it really makes me support and appreciate Obama a lot more when he can point out stuff like this and say, “Hey, that’s not OK and that’s not what America is about.”

In case you guys need a refresher, the incident Obama’s referring to was during a GOP debate last week when a gay soldier asked Rick Santorum a DADT-related question, only to be met with boos from the audience.

As far as the stuff about Rick Perry and climate change, it’s good to know that there are OTHER people who also think these guys are crazy.

Also, while we’re on the subject about GOP candidates, I have a question: Since when did it become OK, or rather commonplace, for GOP candidates to infuse so much religion into their campaigns? Rick Perry’s co-chair claims God is sending disasters because of gay people and Michele Bachmann has called the homosexual lifestyle “Satanic.” Whatever happened to “Separation of Church and State?”

Don’t even get me started on how wrong it is that someone as crazy as Michele Bachmann could even be seriously considered a candidate for the presidency…

But, I digress. How do you guys feel about President Obama’s support? Are any of you ex-Republicans like he mentioned?

They Can’t separate their campaigns from God and their personal belief in him. They remember all to well the fundamentalist christians that voted for W. because of his “belief in God. Still kudos to the President for pointing out idiocy.

I can’t support any candidate who doesn’t support gay marriage, and that includes Obama. He says his “religious values” just don’t allow him to support it. You may be goo goo over Obama, but I most certainly am not!

I’m not a fan of obama either but there is no suitable alternative that can win, that won’t screw us over in other ways. Every one of the GOP candidites are beyond extreme with religion and social issues. I very much have no gay marriage than have someone like rick perry or michelle bachmann completely destroy any hiv research money, make sodomy illegal, make “pray the gay away” a govt sponsored thing, destroy scientific research, make religion the main force in govt, etc. I have to weigh the disadvantages and advantages of all the people running, and so far it’s obama for me.

I’m not going to get too far into a political debate, but I will say that I stand behind my president 100% and I am definitely voting for him again. He has done more good for people then the other presidents that we have had during MY lifetime. Granted I agree with “Grayson Friend” below, but we have to start somewhere and if I have to choose over a candidate that is going to boo gay soldiers or one that doesn’t want to acknowledge global warming then it’s pretty clear who I support.

I just don’t get the Republicans. Calling them crazy is putting it lightly. They’ve turned into a far right-wing religious CULT. They dictate what their members can and cannot espouse publicly and seem to have developed some sort of hive mind. It’s surreal and damn scary.

Well, anytime a point of view, any point of view, is threatened to the extent it may become extinct – those subscribing to that point of view become the loudest and most aggressive they have have ever been. And so it is that a Black Democratic President serves to arouse racists and fringe right wing radicals to such an extent, they have overwhelmed the Republican party and their extremism is sold as ‘mainstream’.

President Obama is not innocent. He has run a very conservative Presidency, far to the right of Richard Nixon – and thereby forcing anyone allergic to a Black President to assume fringe right wing politics to distinguish themselves politically in a ‘non racist’ fashion. So bigots can now be bigots in the Republican party and there are no longer moderate Republicans to call them out as bigots. Thanks to President Obama, no Moderate Republican can win the Republican nomination.

The problem is that they don’t believe in separation of church and state. They think this country was founded on Christianity. Ironically, the first non-natives came here seeking freedom from a religion. Many of the founding fathers were agnostic or even against Christianity. But that will never sink into the far-right’s thick skulls.

there is one moderate republican candidate and I pray for all our sakes that he gets the republican nomination otherwise we are all screwed. So far Mitt Romney has more or less kept quite about social issues and has focused on the important economic issues. plus while he was govenor of mass. his state was the first to legalize gay marriages and it has a health plan similar (but slightlu more effective than) ObamaCare. Obama has my vote for sure but I will accept only Romney as second best….

The rest of the world is pleading with America to not vote for these crazy right wing people. You don’t have to love Obama or even like. Just think very carefully though before you chuck him out of office for someone who hates gay and believes that any more of socialism is a communist plot. Show people all around the world you are a forward thinking country, don’t vote Republican in 2012.
