Marriage According to the Bible (Infographic)

Whenever I see those fired up Christian fundamentalists I just shake my head. How many of them do you think really read the Bible? I’m not just talking about going to church on Sunday and listening to some guy who got a 2 year degree at a Bible college tell you how he was told to interpret the Bible.

Let me just mention that I am not against Christianity or against religion as a whole. I am against people using religion as an excuse to support their xenophobia, racism and sexism. With that said, enjoy this cool infographic complete with the thumbs up on who it is okay to marry and who it is okay to just sleep with…. now, where is my concubine?

Just this, if they want to do the take the bible literally then they have to accept gay marriage simply because it is never literally forbidden. The exact line Man shale not lay with a man as he dose with a woman dose in fact imply that there is a way a man can lay with another man. The line is in reffrence to property rights and that of a man’s right to his owned woman IE wife. Its literally saying you can’t rape a man as you can your wife.

Or it’s saying to be yourself. A gay man would not desire to have sex with a woman, so he could still have sex with a man and not be in violation of this statement so long as he did not also have sex with women. Not entirely sure where that interpretation would leave bisexuality, though… (I certainly wouldn’t suggest that being bi is any more or less right than being straight or gay.

You forgot Deuteronomy 25. If a man dies with no son, his brother is required to marry his wife. If he doesn’t want to, she gets the pleasure of publicly taking his shoe and spitting in his face. Not sure what happens to her after that. I suppose she lives in poverty and dies.

It’s amazing how many ignorant people there are out there so willing to follow the writings of a book without question and without actually reading the book. I was raised Roman Catholic and we were not supposed to read the bible, we were taught via the Catechism which was their view of the bible. Look at Scientology created by a science fiction writer, with so many faithful followers.
It’s just sad how many sheep we have in the world just willing to follow the herd without question.

All concubines or extras wives were reported in the Bible.. but never condoned. In fact Solomon was outright told not to and suffered as a result. The leverite marriage was so save a widow from server poverty. Same for the rapist (nobody would ever marry a rape victim and they would be in the same dire circumstances as a widow). The property marriage was again reported but not condoned. They were to take care of their wife’s property.. no marry it.

You know just because those people choice to do that back
in Biblical times does not mean that it is what God wanted them to do! Its kind
of like today! In the Bible it says that homosexuality is wrong God forbids it.
In the Bible He says it is an abomination. (Lev 18:22), but people still do it.
They worshiped cows and Kings back then to but that’s not what God wanted. (the
10 commandments Exodus 20:1-17[commandment 1]) You said don’t tell me ‘You’re
not supposed to take the literal interpretation of the Bible’. There is a lot
of gray areas in the bible and room for interpretation but this scripture is pretty
clear! Now show me where in the Bible did God say to Jacob, Nahor, Caleb,
Solomon, Manassah, or any of the other names mentioned in your Chart that they
should have sex with their slaves or have several different wives, ect. I’m not
saying that I hate people that are Gay or that God hates gay people. I know he
loves everyone no matter what you do. You have the right to choice to be
whatever you want, God Gave us free while. I know I’m not going to change your
mind and that’s not what I’m trying to do. I just think you should think about taking
info from the Bible unless you understand it! You can’t just read a couple
verses or a couple chapters and pick out some words and say ok look at what
Jacob did in the Bible, that must mean that it’s ok in Gods Eyes!

So, you complain about lack of context in the article, then leave out the context of Leviticus. Good job, you hypocrite (and this is not a flame, as you have met the literal definition of the word).

Leviticus was a holiness code for the Israelites, to set them apart from the Canaanites and other inhabitants of the area. And the verse you cite is between two verses about idolatry. The verse you are citing from Leviticus was a specific reference to a religious practice in the area of a (male) priest lying with other men as an avatar of a fertility goddess. It is a command to not do that, nothing about non-ritual relations. And even further, these laws from Leviticus only applied at the time to Israelites, and apply currently only to those who believe. Leviticus was never a law for outsiders, it was always for those who worship God, so applying it to laws that govern a nation of many faiths would be a misapplication.

I’d like to make a comment but it’s not about civil unions. It’s more so on your use of scripture as references.

I think your illustration is implying that God accepted the practice of polygamy/polandry. I think there’s a difference between God describing actions (through scripture) and prescribing an action. The Bible describes polygamy but it never prescribes the act. Same thing goes for divorce and slavery. The Torah makes provision for divorce yet Jesus states that it’s actually against God’s will. God made provision for divorce for a time not because He approved of it, but because of man’s “hardness of heart.” (ref: Matthew 19:1-12)

People were not perfect and were blessed in spite of it (sound familiar?) Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all deceived God and yet God blessed them. That doesn’t indicate God condones lies and deceit. God bless people because He’s gracious, not because they’re obedient. King David and Solomon took on multiple wives but again, the Torah (Deu 17:17) condemns kings taking on multiple wives.

When the Bible does define the covenant of marriage, it says “a man” and “his wife” (not plural). It says the two become “one flesh.” Marriage is intended to mirror the faithful relationship between Christ and His church (Eph 5). If polygamy was prescribed, that would suggest we can distribute our covenantal affection toward a plurality of lovers.

So in short, there aren’t several different ‘marriages’ approved by God.
