‘We’re Going to the Chapel and We’re Gonna Be Rejected’ NC Couples Refused Marriage Licenses

Denied.

“We’ve been together for 25 years. We’re in our mid 60′s. Can you tell us what steps we might take to become full and equal citizens under the law before we die? Can you help us with that?”

We dare you not to get choked up while watching these same-sex couples, these families ask North Carolina city clerks to grant them marriage licenses, only to be rejected over and over again.

Unlike some clerks in the news, the employees here make it clear as can be that they support equality, but North Carolina law currently forbids them from issue licenses to these couples – even to the women who have outlasted every one of their straight friends’ marriages.

After you wipe the tears from your eyes (No judgment from us…sniffle), consider leaving a message of support on the We DO Campaign’s site. We did.

When do you think these couples will finally be given their right to marry the person they love?

There’s no law like the one in Washington that states that government employees like these clerks may technically violate a law if it’s been proven unconstitutional in court multiple times?

I can’t stop crying. This is just so awful. I am 30 years old, not an idealistic kid, but no, I most certainly DO NOT ACCEPT that this is just the way things are. I can’t. I saw a video yesterday, that I hope you guys don’t mind me sharing, that sums this up perfectly. I live right near the NC border, in Rock Hill,SC. I am single, and very lonely, but, in a weird way, almost glad of it, because I have no one to marry. They wouldn’t let me even if I did.

My heart goes out to each and every one of these couple’s just as it goes out to each and every binational couple that cannot get married because of DOMA and the effect’s that has on immigration the time to end all of these discrimitory laws has come our gov needs to wake up and over turn DOMA and pass federal laws that allows everybody to get married that is of consenting age

Have faith, Shannon Barber. I am 45 now but was once lonely & young like u. I felt that no one wanted me. Then one nite after being online on my very 1st computer & getting frustrated w/all the people out there that just wanted 2 “play games” w/me & other things, I started 2 leave, & suddenly she appeared in my window on my puter. & that was all it took. I thot about not answering her “Hi Ray”, but something said just say Hi back. & I did. & from then on it was love @ 1st “Hi”. We were only 2gether 4 yrs. until she passed away in 2004. She was the 1st True Love & 1st Lesbian relationship I ever had. We loved each other w/all our hearts & souls. Somex’s was hard becuz of her family but that was another story. & we stuck by each other until the very end. She was the love of my life & will always have a place reserved in my heart just especially 4 her. I have a new partner now of 4 yrs. in Nov.
& I always remember how I use 2 think that I wouldn’t ever have somebody 2 love or love me back. & I think how sad & lonely I was. Even tho I was a loner & liked 2 tell myself I didn’t mind it. But I did. U WILL find some1 2 love & that loves u back, Shannon. Just have faith. It will happen when u least xpect it. That’s what I learned. & U WILL b able 2 marry that person that u love, 2. I c it happening someday. Mayb not now but soon.
My partner & I would like 2 say a prayer 4 u if u don’t mind evrynite when we go 2 bed. Starting 2nite.
