7 Reasons Why You Will Fall Madly in Love With New Orleans
5. The History
New Orleans is one of the oldest cities in the United States, and also has one of the oldest and best maintained preservation districts in the country. The French Quarter was created as a military-style grid of seventy squares in the same year New Orleans was founded, 1718. French Canadian naval officer Jean Baptiste Bienville was responsible for the layout that has become synonymous with NOLA. While the “Great Mississippi Bubble” caused the French Missippi Company to fail, the French legacy endures. The central square, the church of St. Louis, the Ursuline Convent, and street names like Bourbon are all reminders of New Orleans’ history.
And of course, there’s the – shall we say – unsavory history of the city that is also so intriguing!
