22 Year Old Alex Morse is America’s Youngest Gay Mayor

The city of Holyoke, Massachusetts has elected a 22 year old gay mayor. Alex Morse graduated from Brown University in May of this year.

While many other fresh-faced college grads head out into the world and gain entry level jobs, Morse will tackle issues like balancing the city’s budget and improving transit.

Morse previously spent three years as a member of the Governor’s LGBT Commission. He also spent three years during college working for Democratic US Rep. David N. Cicilline of Rhode Island.

Congrats to Alex Morse, America’s youngest gay mayor. You go boy!

This is cool, but personally I would never vote for somebody that young to be mayor of my town, regardless of sexuality. A lot of towns are facing budget shortfalls, underfunded schools, and a host of other problems – I wouldn’t trust somebody literally my age to effectively deal with (or even advocate for) fixing those problems.

Youth is not an automatic sign of experience, no more than age a sign of wisdom. I have met some 15-year-olds more prepared and intelligent than many of the 50-year-olds we elect every year. Kids nowadays are smarter than people give them credit for – adults, especially conservatives, like to waive off the young, progressive crowd as “naive” but historically, that young, progressive crowd is what’s leading our country, and I think they should be better represented in government.

I see how he is just fresh from college, but isn’t it fresh for people to already judge him without seeing his work? He earned that title as Mayor and its commendable that he was able to harness large support despite being gay and young, so all I can say is congratulations.
