GOP Senator Drops Religious Exemption in Anti-Bullying Law
Last week the Michigan State legislature passed an anti-bullying bill named “Matt’s Safe School Law”. The only problem was that it didn’t actually do anything to stop bullying, instead it pretty much gave a blueprint on how to bully kids by including a statement that bullying was acceptable as long as done so “for religious or moral reasons”.
Senator Gretchen Whitmer spoke out against this terrible bill. Her ‘Oh Hell No’ speech can be found here. The bill was such a sham that Stephen Colbert eviscerated it on his television program.
Great news this morning out of Michigan as Senator Rick Jones, a Republican who is responsible for the moral and religious exemption in the bill, will drop the exemption and vote on the earlier version of the bill. It seems Jones has come under a great deal of scrutiny from LGBT and Muslim groups as a result of his tinkering with “Matt’s Safe School Law”.
The law is named after Matt Epling, a Michigan teen who took his life in 2002 after being a victim of anti-gay bullying. Matt’s father Kevin spoke out against this bill shortly after it’s passage last week.
Way to go Senator Whitmer, Michigan teens are safer thanks to your hard work!
