Security Guard to Gay Veteran at Occupy Wall Street: Your Fly’s Open, Faggot

A security guard working for Brookfield Properties, the owners of Zuccotti Park who leveraged to have NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg forcibly remove protesters from the Occupy Wall Street encampment late last night, is seen here in this video calling a gay six year army veteran a faggot.

Oh HELL no.

Joey Boots, the faggot behind the camera, was injured in the line of duty while serving his country. Which is more than we can say about the homophobic Brookfield Properties.

And before anyone even suggests that this unnamed bigot doesn’t represent the entire company he works for let me say this: When you are the boots on the ground, one of the literal faces of the company forcibly evicting peaceful protestors from the heart of the biggest struggle in the entire world at present, then you most certainly do represent your employer every second you are in uniform. This man’s voice is most certainly the voice of Brookfield Properties.

There’s also the matter of Occupy Wall Street making equal rights for LGBT Americans one of their central tenets. In this perfectly encapsulated moment, we see a representative from a wealthy corporation using a homophobic pejorative against those who are protesting for a more equal country.

Please take a moment to voice your disdain for this employee, this company, and the mayor’s decision to remove the peaceful protestors in the first place. No cussing, no condemning to hell. Find a way to get your point across without calling anyone offensive names – like say, FAGGOT.

I normally agree with the posts I see on your site, But today you have gone too far. I was there when the police arrived on scene. The protesters were asked to evacuate the park and for the most part they exited quietly and relatively quickly. A small, very vocal group of trouble makers refused to leave after several requests. They were warned that they would be arrested if they refused to take down their tents and leave. The did nothing and the police moved in. It was the protesters that were violent and started any confrontation. I say this as a supporter of the OWS movement. As for the security guard his comments were indeed rude and uncalled for, however I don’t think his bigotry is a company policy. I am a gay man who works hard to end bigotry and hate, but I will not just randomly accuse a corporation of hatred based on a single statement of a low-level employee. As far as I am concerned, your diatribe is no less egregious than the security guards statement.

Thank you roygbv! That’s exactly what I was going to say. I’m sorry, but sometimes, the way these articles are written is so misleading. Reading the article, I was pissed to hear about what that dude said. Then I watched the video. Those comments were 100% uncalled for, hateful, and ridiculous, but good lord! The guy behind the camera is so annoying! He is clearly desperate to get some kind of reaction out of those workers, and they just gave him what he wanted… Some attention.

Actually, you are wrong in the statement that the “low-level employee” doesn’t represent his company. Any time anyone is in company uniform in a public area, they are a direct representation of that company. Why else would companies terminate employees for making asses of themselves in public while on the clock. regardless of position/job/whatever, he represents his place of employment. This may not be their stand as a whole, hell, for all anyone knows, the ceo could be gay, it doesn’t matter. Aside from being a bigot, this man has also smeared the reputation of his company.

Hmm…Unlike some of the other comments posted here, I do agree with UB on this one. The man with the camera was not being antagonistic. I believe that he was trying to make a specific point. All of the people he questioned responded appropriately or chose not to respond at all. That is the professional thing to do. I agree that the employee who made the discriminatory slur does in fact represent the entire company. His attitude does reflect poorly on his entire company and so do his coworkers who stood by and watched his hateful behavior. I am a nurse and work in a hospital. If a made this same statement to a patient or family member I would lose my job without a question. Why? Because I represent the hospital and the nursing profession as well. This ugly behavior would not be tolerated. I also think the response of the supervisor was inadequate. He should have apologized immediately, and verbalized that he would speak with his employee, and then he should have walked straight over to his employee to discuss the situation with the employee. Instead, his first response was to deny the incident to a man holding a video camera. Ridiculous! We cannot accept this behavior on any terms what so over. It is inexcusable to say that the man with the video camera was annoying and even to hint at the idea that he deserved this treatment. That rationale is horrible and is the same attitude that supports all forms of abuse, mistreatment, bigotry, and bullying.

Zuccotti Guard Fired for Using Slur

Brookfield spokesman Matthew Cherry said of the guard, “His comment was offensive and inexcusable, and we have a policy of zero tolerance for such behavior. In accordance with our code of conduct he’s been terminated from his work with Brookfield.” Cherry told Gothamist the man worked for a Brookfield subcontractor, but he declined to name the subcontractor or say whether it is still being used by Brookfield.
