Why is a Gay Kiss More Outrageous than Millions of Starving Children?

I dislike this pic. I think its exploitative and cruel. This image of 8 malnourished kids has been bandied all over the net and compared to men kissing, Steve Jobs, any other number of “things”. Everyday, millions of people suffer from hunger and malnourishment. There are people in Canada and the US that look like these kids- (like right now, in this moment). They all come from somewhere, some family, and most of them have names, many of them die. I think it’s shallow to compare these issues and suddenly feel good about ourselves- because we “felt something”. Here’s another optic for you, on the left, you have two well groomed, attractive, white men- who probably have not suffered hunger and despite potential discrimination and hate, probably were able to hit the gym, get some health care, and at least create a situation where they felt safe enough to have their photo taken of them making out. The other picture shows at least 8 malnourished black children possibly begging for food. I imagine that they don’t get a whole lot of support, and making out with anyone probably isn’t high on their priority list. I know I’m ranting, and I mean not to sound like a hypocrite. I just think that the problem isn’t what shocks us about these pictures. I think the shocking problem is that most of us aren’t doing enough. Basic human needs aren’t being met, let alone basic human rights (which really are synonymous for me). I can only hope that people stop sitting in righteous indignation, feel strongly about this image for a few minutes, post it online, pass it on and then stop there. “We are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are we free to abandon it.” Talmud. Right?
