So true. Sunday was always the worst tip day, and the day we had the most people hiding their guest check and then lying about what they ordered, or saying “Joe’s got mine” as they walked out the door, but “Joe” either doesn’t know that, or doesn’t pay it, or doesn’t even exist.
So thankful every day to not be in that line of work anymore.

He once told a parable about a man whose fields produced so much surplus that his granaries were filled to the brim. Instead of giving the excess to the poor, this wealthy man constructed more granaries so he could hold on to the excess grain, which would in all likelihood go bad before it could be used.

The parable ends with God striking the hoarder dead, if memory serves.

There are several other examples in the Bible of stinginess that do not end well for the greedy, and not one example that does.

The Bible is unambiguously clear on the spiritual penalties for placing material wealth above the welfare of your fellow man.

The irony here is that the “tip” leaver believes that that’s exactly what he or she is saying – that material wealth should not be put above the welfare of your fellow man. To warn the greedy server that by wanting to actually get paid, he or she is coveting material wealth. The person leaving the fake cash is just trying to save the person’s soul by warning them of their greed! They are, of course, completely oblivious to the obvious hypocrisy they’re displaying.

Well, I made a comment about being even more not-Christian reading something like this, but Kerry’s got a point. Even Jesus said “by their fruits shall ye know them.” We have this odd notion today that because someone says they are a certain thing, that makes them the certain thing–but words have meaning, and if you’re telling me you’re a lion while I can plainly see your long ears and hooves, I think I can tell you’re actually a jackass.

“Christian” means “Christlike.” Christ was all about being generous to the poor and paying people their dues. And he often said that most people would not be able to measure up to his standards. We see that all around us today. Whether the guy was real or not, most of them only want to pay lip service, not actually do the work to be more like him.

“Christian” is a term that solely denotes a person who follows the life and ideas of Jesus Christ. This can be applied to vastly different ideologies that range from Oriental to Methodist. Claiming that there is a “true Christian” image is a bit selfish, considering people from all across the world read and interpret texts in quite different ways (and also in varying degrees).

While I generally agree that claiming there is one “true Christian” image is selfish, that’s not at all what Kerry was saying. She was simply saying that all of the generally agreed upon interpretations of Christianity out there preclude being a stingy jackass, thus such behavior is hypocritical.

It would be like calling myself a generous person and then stealing red kettles from the bell-ringers.

Also another one from Luke 6:30: ”Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.”

Surely this can be easily interpreted as a direct command to submission, no?

As you can see, there are plenty of teachings that can be easily interpreted in various ways yet there is a literal element that is perfectly valid (women who divorce for reasons other than sex are committing adultery and you need to obey and give away what is asked of you). You can (and everyone congregation does) find your own interpretations, however.

Reading comprehension does not appear to be your strong suit. You are arguing a point that I conceded in my initial post. Yes, there is a spectrum of possible interpretations for many parts of the Bible and for Christianity as a whole.

The point that you failed to note, and the one that you cannot refute, is that nowhere in that spectrum of possible interpretations is greed acceptable. Nowhere from Christ’s life or words does any extant sect of Christianity draw the lesson that stinginess or greed are virtuous. So, yes, Kelly is right and you are wrong.

Offhand, I can recall two instances in the Bible where the penalty for greed is death. Luke 12 has the story of the man who had such a good crop his barns weren’t big enough. He decided to build bigger barns to hoard all the harvest for his own benefit, rather than share the bounty with anyone else. He died before he could. There are two poles to the spectrum of interpretations here. One is that God hates greed and killed the man for it. The other is that greed is meaningless waste because no amount of wealth means anything after death. Either way, Jesus was saying greed is bad, very clearly.

The other account I can recall off-hand is in Acts 5, and deals with both greed and integrity.

If you can recall Jesus saying something that would support this person’s stinginess as Christian behavior, please share it. Otherwise, stop trying to support the indefensible position that labels are entirely without conventional and commonly accepted meaning.

My reading comprehension is perfectly fine, thanks for the ad hominem. I took quotes from the bible and interpreted them in a way that would suit me (as if this is something new) and my conclusions are that Jesus wants me to lend money and service to anyone who asks me and that I should ultimately act as a punching bag in the face of abuse – if read literally that is precisely what it says. I am just arguing that people look at passages from the new testament under different lights (not even gonna start with the old one) and that there is no meaning behind a so-called “true Christian”.

On the topic of “money and greed”:”Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.”Wouldn’t this one be in direct conflict with bank accounts or even the entire stock market?

The person who left this fake bill could simply say that they were trying to save a soul from eternal damnation by showcasing the importance of faith over money; they were not being greedy and were actually spreading the word of the Abrahamic god. Another excuse is that they have sinned and that they repent (aren’t we all “sinners” regardless of our actions?) yet they were always “true Christians but they were led astray for a fleeting moment”.

In the end, no, there is no definition of a true Christian. It may seem at first like a bulletproof argument when faced with believers who have done an action that can be perceived as cruel, but it isn’t.

Technically it’s not the general “do not lie” but rather the specific “do not bear false witness against your neighbor” that is one of the commandments.

Which, technically, was broken, as a $0 tip implies the server is a horrible person who provided absolutely no service worthy of any recognition and in fact actively TRIED to ruin the dining experience through blatant neglect or worse.

They make me wince, because I try to follow Christ’s teachings (not perfectly, who can?) and it’s ever more difficult to explain what Christianity is supposed to look like when there’s so many examples like this.

I feel very bad that someone ever came up with the idea of proselytizing via fake money. The Bible is clear from beginning to end that money is not an end in and of itself and we ought not to encourage that belief through cheap tricks and deceptions.

Furthermore, I’m appalled by the implication of this “tip.” The diner seems perfectly content to judge their server as a non-believer, apparently without asking. How presumptuous to assume without any invitation or conversation that someone else requires your intervention for the good of their soul! This is quite possibly the heart of what Jesus meant when he said to see first to the plank in one’s own eye before pointing out the spec in one’s neighbor’s eye.

I received one of these when I was a server too!!! This was about 13 years ago, I am very disappointed to see that it is still happening today. I kept mine in my wallet for a long time. Every time someone would ask me why I’m an atheist, I would pull it out and say “this is why”.

Serving in Hell’s Kitchen (NYC), you have three types of people: 1. the queers and their hangers-on, 2. confused tourists, and 3. self-righteous pricks. I’ve gotten so many of the #3′s, I used to keep a cork-board full of pamphlets and fake bills. The fact of the matter is that saving my soul does not help me pay for the subway ride home. Saving my soul does not put food in my belly. If you want me to read your pamphlet without snorting and laughing like a crazed crack addict, then actually put a real tip with your fake money.

One of the best parts about becoming a manager was having the ability to chase these people down to “talk about how their service was.” Every single time I have done this, the people look around with the utmost guilt and give me more money for the server. They are well aware of what they are doing – they’re either too deluded to realize that they’re being bastards or their rationalization is so poor that a word from a homo is enough for them to face their asshole-ery.

AARGH. I was a server for 6 years to pay for college and grad school. Nothing made me angrier than getting religious pamphlets in lieu of tips. Some would put a dollar with it, which, fine, you’re cheap but at least it’s something. But when there’s no actual money with it and you’ve just spent 2 hours at my table while I filled your coffee cup 8 times and returned your sandwich to the kitchen twice, not because it was prepared incorrectly but because you forgot to tell me you’re allergic to tomatoes and don’t want mayo, when my feet hurt and I won’t get home til 11 and still need to review my notes for my 8am exam tomorrow and I’m taking the bus because I can’t afford to put gas in my car, all you’ve managed to do is show me that no, God will not put gas in my tank or pass my exam for me, and next time you come in with your sanctimonious BS I’ll make sure your fries get sneezed on at least once.

Sorry, that rant might’ve been brewing for a few years….

People obviously do not realize that waiters and waitresses do not make that much money. they LIVE off tips. for them to leave a fake tip (especially one that looks like a 10) and walk off thinking “i probably just made someone’s day” is really ignorant.

I think if I was that waiter and I saw them come in again i would probably tell my supervisor that i am not helping them.
