Are You Transphobic? (Infographic)

We love our trans friends and readers here at UB. But every once in a while it is nice to brush up on what is and what isn’t PC. That is why we have brought you this fantastic infographic which breaks it down into pretty pictures and how-to’s.

On an interesting side note, did you know that between .25% and 1% of the U.S. population identifies as transgender? That means you are more likely to be trans than: be a triplet, attacked by a shark or struck by lightning.

This stuff kills me. People can be so inconsiderate, you’d think it’d be better in the LGBT community but it isn’t really. Some people will still hold prejudices and ignorance when subjects don’t apply to them or if they refuse to educate themselves. It’s good to see a post about this, coming from a gay transman, here. Thanks, guys!

Patrick, I’m sorry to hear that you have had trouble within the community, I have had very few problems with transphobia within the N.O. LGBT community, but every bit of it was from the most butch of the L part of the community. I believe that they may feel trapped themselves.
Generally speaking, if you are true to yourself, most people will accept you, the rest of them don’t matter…

i feel so bad for a friend right now SHE is a beautiful woman, yet SHE gets so much crap from people where SHE lives, from work, housing, because SHE is a transgender…so many of us think SHE just needs to move to better more accepting city. but it is so hard i wish i could help HER more.

I agree, that is a tough one and a question I often wonder about as well. No matter what way a person finds out the preferred pronoun I think the most important thing is sticking to it once established.

I have no problem with someone asking me my PGP (preferred gender pronoun). I’d much prefer that to being called ma’am/she/her

I generally make the best guess I can when it comes to pronouns. For example, if I see someone in a skirt and heels with long, styled hair, I use she, and for someone with hair in a men’s style wearing men’s clothing, I use he. If I’m incorrect in the assumption, please by all means tell me. I use the same approach when it comes to friends in drag. When dressed as women, I use she, and when dressed as men I use he, even when it’s the same person. Again, if corrected, I’ll use the preferred, but to me it seems more rude to ask someone obviously expressing the appearance of a woman if they prefer to be called a man or a woman than it does to refer to that person as female until corrected. To me, asking in that circumstance ignores the appearance chosen and the image being purposely put out. It’s like continuing to call someone the pronoun they don’t prefer after you’ve been corrected.

You may not realise it, but being called by the wrong gender pronoun seriously SUCKS.

Yes, if it’s a person in a skirt, etc, ‘she’ is a relatively safe guess. What about a feminine appearing person in jeans or sweats?

ASK THEM. Seriously, I’m trans, it’s NOT going to offend me if you ask what pronouns I prefer. Don’t say “Are you a he or a she” or that BS, but yes, you really CAN ask “What is your preferred gender pronoun.”

But we must also be honest with ourselves, there will always be times when people honestly make a mistake. (I do still sometimes wear jeans and a tee or maybe a jacket and i get sired.) We must give people an equal chance to learn.
Unfortunately, when we do finally come out and start living our lives, we also become teachers and must have the patience to help people get past their ignorance, because most people do want to learn. The knowledge we impart upon the people we meet will make life much easier for those that follow us.

Most people still default to ‘ma’am’ with me.

The problem with the question “What is your preferred gender pronoun?” is it feels clunky to say, feels…. robotic. My trans friends (and myself) rather a guess and then we gently correct or rather someone ask “Are you a guy or gal?” The last one is the better actually, I tend to laugh and tell them I am a little of both but just go ahead and refer to me as a girl. One of my friends prefers to be referred to as Shi or Hir… and another just tells people to call her by name (I still refer to her as being female, just my way and she understands).

Everyone is different in how they want to be asked, some get throughly offended at the accidental mis-address. Some laugh it off. Some MTF prefer female pronouns, a rare few prefer gender neutral ones. Some FTM go ballistic at being mistaken for being male, some just shrug it off. Some people do no fall in the binary ANYWHERE so they just have their own rules. My spouse presents himself as male but is always being called ma’am due to his high voice. I tend to present myself as female but have been asked if I was male a few times. We all are different.

You don’t have to ask, you use the pronouns of the gender the person presents. period. You do this for all transgender people, be they in DRAG or transsexual, it’s called being polite. And if you’re told differently, then respect them and use the pronouns requested.

What about people like a guy I knew in HS, who cross-dressed, for political purposes (he wore a skirt to school to challenge the dress code). How is he presenting?

No one should stipulate what is deemed as appropriate for someone else to say – people take offence at different things, and moreover its not what you say that’s offensive – it’s the context. Granted I agree most of the stuff in the infographic would be offensive to most people whether they’re trans or not.

Yes, people take offense at different things. But you’re wrong, in that there are some things that are inherently offensive.

Such as calling a person “it” or “he-she” (or she-male, or shim). Such as asking what my “real” name is. ’Or asking what’s between my legs (which also covers asking if I’ve had surgery). Or asking “what are you REALLY?”

Of course, MOST of this would be covered by common courtesy, if such a think actually existed.

…my ex was very Transphobic & when he found out that i am now living as a woman, he was very rude saying stuff like “So Ur a Tranny Now”, trying to belittle me. …i remember when we were together, he used to work with a transwoman and he would always come home and say disrespectful things about her, and saying that she’s not a “Real Woman” and that she “Never Will Be, No Matter What”, and referring to her by her birth name only. It was very disrespectful! i tried to educate him and to get him to see things from her view point but nomatter what, he wouldn’t agree or even attempt to put himself in her shoes. …no wonder the relationship didn’t last lol

I actually made the slip with pronoun once, but I knew her before she became her real self so I accidently called her a him once… I got a gentle (which for her still hurt) slap and I have made sure I never made that mistake again.
If you think it is hard being gay, just take a minute to remember: society is not only asking our transgender community to justify the ones they love, society is also demanding they justify their own bodies.

I would consider assuming someone to be transgender before he or she has told you, to be more inappropriate than using the wrong pronoun. So it doesn’t make sense that I be obligated to ask what the preferred pronoun is. Once told, of course, I should use the right one, but before that I think I have a reasonable right to make a best guess.
