Newt Gingrich’s Gay Sister Problem

Newt and Candace Gingrich

Certainly, Newt Gingrich attracts plenty of criticism, especially among those within the LGBT community. He has been involved in some of the most conservative politics since the seventies. He has been known to cheat on his wives - yes, plural. And he even helped cause the temporary shut down of the federal government during the nineties.

But as he attempts to cover up these blots on his personal and professional lives, along with many other possible liabilities the old man has in the closet, there is one that hasn’t stayed in the closet at all, his own lesbian half-sister, Candace.

As Newt continues his rise in the most recent GOP presidential candidate polls, his attempt to claim the nomination to take on President Obama in next year’s presidential election seems almost plausible. So it is hardly surprising that his sister’s 2008 public letter to him, regarding the passage of California’s Proposition 8, and the comments he made on Fox News after the LGBT protesters were unleashed, is making it’s rounds again.

In the letter, Candace bashes her brother for seeming “incapable of looking for new ideas” and calls upon him to “stop being a hater.”

Candace, who is twenty years younger than Newt, has been known to be fairly vocal in her opposition to her brother’s politics, especially when it comes to gay rights, or her brother’s dismissive homophobic comments meant to diminish those millions of Americans. She works for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lobbyist organizations for LGBT rights, married a gay couple on Friends, and wrote a book about her experiences as the much younger sister to Newt.

Regardless, the 2008 letter takes an impressive stand against her her “big bro” and we are certainly hoping it isn’t all Candace has to say on the matter. But, it’s fair to say that we too can understand how embarrassing it might be to call Newt family.
