Obama and Sec. Clinton Announce U.S. Will Tie Foreign Aid to LGBT Rights

"LGBT rights are human rights!"

The Obama administration announced on Tuesday that the United States would use all the tools of American diplomacy, including the potent enticement of foreign aid, to promote gay rights around the world.

In a memorandum issued by President Obama in Washington and in a speech by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton here, the administration vowed to actively combat efforts by other nations that criminalize homosexual conduct, abuse gay men, lesbians, bisexuals or transgendered people, or ignore abuse against them.

“Some have suggested that gay rights and human rights are separate and distinct,” Mrs. Clinton said at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, “but in fact they are one and the same.”

Those of you paying close attention to UB’s international headlines in recent weeks will recall British Prime Minister David Cameron making a similar pledge to halt foreign aid to nations that criminalize gay sex and jail LGBT citizens.

Even the suggestion that state-sponsored criminal behavior towards gays and lesbians must come to an abrupt halt for foreign countries to receive U.S. cash has American bigots conservatives choking on their oatmeal.

Clinton’s audience in Geneva included diplomats from Arab, African and other nations where homosexuality is criminalized or where brutality and discrimination against gay and transgender people is tolerated or encouraged. Many of the ambassadors in the audience responded with stony faces and rushed out of the room as soon as she finished speaking.

Rick Perry, shining bastion of tolerance and brain power, released the following statement:

“This is just the most recent example of an administration at war with people of faith in this country. Investing tax dollars promoting a lifestyle many Americans of faith find so deeply objectionable is wrong. President Obama has again mistaken America’s tolerance for different lifestyles with an endorsement of those lifestyles. This administration’s war on traditional American values must stop.”

Right. Refusing to pay foreign countries millions of dollars to jail, kill, and just generally beat the crap out of gay people is tantamount to a war on traditional American values.

What do you think of Secretary Clinton’s speech, President Obama’s historic new policy, and Governor Perry’s clASSy reaction?
