Checking in with the ABSOLUTELY ZERO Gay Military Problems Post-DADT Repeal

The NBC Nightly News ran this fantastic segment last night about the absolutely zero problems that have occurred in the U.S. military in the year since Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repealed.

Not one complaint. Not one incident of harassment – sexual or otherwise, bullying, hazing, assault, creepy glances in the shower, refusal to share a bunk. Not one.

By any metric you choose to measure with, literally by any standard of judgment, there has not been on single problem in the United States Armed Forces relating to gay soldiers in the entire year of aftermath since President Obama repealed DADT.

The anti-gay religious leaders and politicians who warned otherwise were lying. Republicans who claimed there would be rapes, sexual harassment, damage to troop morale and a mass un-enlisting of heterosexual soldiers were lying. Because that’s all they have in this debate – lies.

Dan Savage is today calling upon the media to refuse to republish and re-air these lies all over again as we march closer to federal marriage equality and the repeal of DOMA.

The exact same bigots who predicted that the sky would fall if DADT was repealed make the exact same claims about marriage equality. The media shouldn’t just repeat their lies. Anti-gay bigots have earned a credibility problem. Reporters should challenge the bigots: They were 100% wrong about the “danger” of repealing DADT—why should anyone believe them when they warn about the “danger” of repealing DOMA? Their doom-and-gloom warnings on ending the ban on gays serving openly in the military were completely unfounded. Why should anyone take their doom-and-gloom warnings about ending the ban on same-sex marriage seriously?

On a final note, I know I’m beating a dead horse here, but ZERO.

I’m nearly 65. When I was 11 I knew. From then through 18, I was totally alone trying to figure things out (oh, yeah, no “gay pride” or “it gets better” back in the ’60s. You figured you were the only one, and blamed yourself for being so screwed up.) At age 20, I was in the Navy and decided it was time for me to fish or cut bait, and I came out, and got thrown out. Two remarkable things happened. One was that the sky did NOT fall. The other was that most of the military personnel involved in throwing me out were either neutral or supportive of me as a person, and some were even apologetic about the way the UCMJ forced them to act. But I had been one of those guys assigned to VIP patients, ranging from the Vice President to US Senators to movie stars like Judy Garland, and believe me, I called in all those cards to the extent I could. (Yes, when VPOTUS sends a letter to your CO inquiring about you, it gets attention!!!!) So one month after my 21st birthday, I’m bounced out of the Navy. And then, gradually, as Rilke put it, I lived along into a “just be yourself” mentality, which served me well through 20+ years of teaching high school, and 15 years of private industry, etc. At some point or another the tide turned, and in some small way, I think I contributed. Hundreds, if not thousands of students knew a gay guy as “just part of the way things are.” And now the politicians who still so readily play the “gay” card seem to just about everyone as the bigots they are.
