Best Buy Employee Allegedly Warns PS3 Purchasers of ‘Faggot Based CPU’

Yesterday, my friends and I went to Best Buy to get a part to fix a broken PS3, and one of their employees approached us asking if he could help us find anything. We told him that we already found what we needed, but he wanted to know what we were using it for. He then went on to explain to me about how the Xbox 360 breaks less often because it has certain parts vs. the PS3 which has a “faggot based CPU”. The four of us were too stunned to say anything, bought the part, and left.

My friends and I still feel upset, and are thinking of going to talk to the store manager. I’ve never been in this situation before, and I appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks!

And how pray tell does a “faggot-based CPU” operate?

This is coming from Reddit, i.e. the internet’s sounding board, so verification can be more than a bit tricky. But would anyone be surprised to learn this customer’s experience was true?

Homophobia is nothing new for Best Buy. You may remember the electronics giant donating $100,000 to extremely anti-gay political group Minnesota Forward last year.

Just something to keep in mind as you make plans to spend all of that Christmas cash you got, boys and girls.

Honestly, it’s one employee. Don’t blame the company for one person. I don’t shop there anyway, but if I did and someone said that to me, I would have let the manager on duty know that they have an unprofessional employee on the floor that needs some retraining. Stand up for yourself!

I used to work in the Best Buy stores and can tell you that the atmosphere there from the top down is hypermasculine to the point of being very uncomfortable. They’re not really tolerant of deviations from the normative. It’s also a culture heavy on “salesmanship.” So, they were likely trying to make these people feel emasculated about their purchase so that they’d consider a more manly purchase (???) like an XBOX. (But anyone who knows squat about gaming systems knows the XBOX’s red ring of death is such a frequent problem, that Microsoft now gives owners a 3 year warranty for any red rings of death.)

It was just one employee. While it’s true the company gave money to some political prick who didn’t deserve it, (Target did the same thing) that is the company’s choice. If they want to support homophobic bigots, that is their right. It is also your right to disagree and not shop there. But in this case, I think it would have been better to find a manager and report the person to them.

Best Buy was one of the first corporations to support GLBT people. I know of so many trans people that worked in corporate for Best Buy when transitioning because it was the only place that had a) domestic partner insurance, b) trans therapy covered under insurance c) unisex bathrooms. If you talk to management, that employee will be punished possibly fired. This is NOT a Best Buy issue, it is a single person issue. YOU PEOPLE NEED TO STOP JUDGING A CORPORATION BASED ON ONE OR TWO PEOPLE. Seriously, the people at UB are worse than bigots! Open your eyes, and quit acting like the majority of people are automatically homophobic. Look at all sides before taking the path worst taken and assume that is what is going on!! You make the GLBT community look bad with your site. I’m personally only still on the list because I can find the basis of stories then research the reality of the situations… Perhaps a more civil, balanced, and open minded gay blog needs to be opened in place of yours.

how about we judge it based on one donation? of 100,000.00? to the man who said on his website “I believe marriage is the union between one man and one woman.”

“As a legislator, I have consistently supported the constitutional marriage amendment that protects traditional marriage,”
regardless of the opportunities they have given to their employees, they support (in monetary terms) a man who supports bigotry and hatred. Best Buy, much like target, claimed to support him based on his economic plans, NOT his social plans… but the man RAN on his social agenda. You can not separate the two and ONLY donate to his economic views.

First off, they did not give directly to an anti-gay program. They gave it to a job creation company. That job creation company gave money to an anti-gay candidate. The stink about Best Buy and Target “giving money to anti-gay organizations” is drawn from miscommunication. Fact is, Best Buy and Target are a couple of the most LGBT friendly retail stores in the country. Their donation was not intended to go to anti-gay purposes, but to job creation. And the money donated by MN Forward was probably for the same reason, even if it is a poor choice.

I know this is hard to believe, but the world doesn’t revolve around LGBT issues and LGBT rights – there are a lot of other issues the world is worried about.

So, to summarize, they didn’t GIVE money to that legislator. They gave it to a seperate company, and that company gave that money for reasons having nothing to do with his stance on LGBT rights. Calm down and get over it.

I completely agree with you and everything you have said in your post.

And for the most part I always seem to find that Kevin Farrell’s articles on Unicorn booty are ALWAYS over exaggerated and blown out of proportion. Seriously, I have just learned to take everything he says with a grain of salt and a shot of penicillin. Sorry, but this is just one employee. I work at Best Buy and that wouldn’t be tolerated. We have numerous gay and lesbian employees and work with LGBT groups.

While Best Buy may have had laudable LGBT goals initially, I have patronized several of their stores in different states and counties over the past decade. My personal experience has firmly confirmed the aforementioned event is far from a single-person or single-store issue. My partner and I therefore no longer patronize their stores, anywhere, as nearly all of their products are available from alternative vendors at equal or better prices… sans discrimination and petulant attitudes.

This is obviously the salespersons opinion and I am sure if this were reported, he would be dealt with accordingly. I definitely suggest going back (not calling) and speaking with the general manager- if you are not satisfied with his answer, call the district manager. Never just walk away- it tells him it is ok to speak in that manner. We have got to stand up for ourselves, so I say go for it!!!!

Xbox 360 breaks less? Hum.

PS3 – less than 3%
360 – First 5 years plagued with RROD estimated 33-55% hardware failure.

To be fare there was a recent survey and they found that 10% of them fail now. Probably a mix of old and new. I will go as far to say that the slim 360′s are half way decent.

But M$ took that 3 year warranty away and Xbox is the only one pay to play, the only one with no browser. $299 for a console with no blu ray, plus no battery packs and almost every exclusive (including Halo, Gears, ME, left4Dead & Fable) are on PC.

PS3 actually broke a lot – when it first came out. I remember hearing all the complaints. It’s much better now. So is XBox 360. Shame that in two years they’ll probably replace it with a new system that can break on us.

As far as lastability, Wii is the best. Shame it doesn’t have the game library to back it up.

Wouldn’t a Homosexual CPU work better then a straight one? I mean usually Homosexuals have higher incomes and nicer stuff, and when they have kids it’s planned. So I think it would run much smoother and faster. Because a straight one would have knocked up it’s CPU girlfriend and now have bills to pay, a shotgun wedding to go through with, a mortgage, unwanted little CPUs running around, bills to pay, lots of debt….. college funds for the kids future, plus the stress of unwanted family, marriage etc.

I am Michelle cook hill’s niece and i work for best buy. I am transgender and for me to even think that something like this might be true would be appalling. I have never had any rude comments or people be rude to me at best buy. I love working there and its just not to be a second guess that people act like this with how many lgbt people work here. it could be a misunderstanding about the situation or something else. it doesn’t mean the whole company would be the cause of this it would be that of the individual who just hates people because he doesn’t like his own life or isn’t happy
