Kelly Clarkson Invokes Wrath of Internet by Endorsing Homophobic Ron Paul
Kelly Clarkson put her political ignorance on display yesterday by tweeting her endorsement of Ron Paul in the coming presidential election.
The pop star, who has until this moment effortlessly attracted a rather enormous gay following, seemed to be unaware that Ron Paul has made headlines throughout much of December for his history of homophobia, racism, anti-semitism, and general malaise for anyone other than white, straight men.
Twitter lit up with shocked fans responses to Clarkson’s co-signing of a man who refuses to even use the bathrooms that gay people have used. The holy trinity of trolling – criticizing, condemning and corralling others to assail against the target – was in full effect, with many denouncing Clarkson as stupid (which she is not), ignorant (which she most certainly is), and a bigot herself (which she doesn’t seem to be, but we’ll get to that in a second).
Here are Clarkson’s tweets:
Real talk, It bothers me that someone would make a political endorsement without first investigating their candidate. It’s not like Clarkson even needed to dig deep. Ron Paul’s bigotry has maintained real estate on the front page of most political and national news websites for a month now. That Clarkson didn’t realize her man was disapproving of men who love men is bizarre.
But Clarkson’s reluctance to admit her mistake is unconscionable in our opinion. Rather than come out and immediately apologize for endorsing racism, anti-semitism and homophobia by way of her candidate, she went on to blame those criticizing her as being the one’s full of hate.
In a word, no.
Clarkson’s line about respecting decisions and beliefs is exactly what she is being chastised over. The man she would prefer to take the American presidency is embroiled in a scandal because despite his “live and let live” mantra, there are rapidly increasing examples of his actual attitude being more along the lines of “live and let live, but only if you live like me.”
Kelly, we love you girl, but you are wrong on this. That doesn’t make you stupid or a terrible human being or on your way to a fiery afterlife, as some are lambasting. But it does make you terribly stubborn for not saying so. You’re either against homophobia or you aren’t. And until you make that absolutely clear to your fans, you’ll continue to face judgment and well-deserved criticism.
Fix this, please. Our lives would suck without you.
***UPDATE: To those of you insisting Ron Paul doesn’t have a racist or homophobic bone in his body, might we point you in the direction of this new Huntsman video that sums it all up quite nicely?
He’s anti-MLK, y’all. Who in their right mind is anti-MLK?! You simply cannot be pro-equality (in any of its various shades) and anti-MLK. ‘Nuff said.
