Cancun to Offer Marriage Equality Alongside Alcohol Poisoning, STDs, Pregnancy

Cancun and other resort areas on the Mexican Caribbean will have a new attraction for gay and lesbian couples from the United States, Canada and Europe, allowing them to legalize their unions thanks to a quirk in the local civil code, activist Patricia Novelo told Efe.

“This market niche … is very attractive for European, Canadian and American (homosexual) couples,” said the spokesperson for Colectivo Diversidad.

Novelo said that in January the first same-sex group wedding will be held in the resort area as part of local support for the human rights of the gay community.

Cancun carries with it a reputation as one of those places in the world where what happens there doesn’t necessarily stay there. It should come as a surprise to absolutely nobody that Cancun is known as much for its side effects (alcohol poisoning, sexually transmitted diseases, unplanned pregnancy) as for its decadent nightlife and world famous spring break.

Catering to LGBT couples is no mere afterthought for the tourism industry. Gay tourists typically spend 45-60% more than their heterosexual counterparts. Gay weddings might very well be the key to solving the world’s financial problems.

Over 1200 same-sex weddings have been performed in Mexico since gay marriage was legalized in Mexico City. The option of a coastal wedding should give that number a significant boost.

I can be as cynical as the next guy but, seriously, a region begins performing gay marriages and the headline leads with snark and insults? That seems unnecessary.

I definitely agree. I think Kevin is just a bad Journalist. I made a comment to the same effect on another article he wrote recently… He is really bring down UB and the LGBT community with his articles that constantly blow things out of proportion and his over exaggerations. Co-Owner of UB or not for the better of this site and the community he should just stop writing articles or learn to become a better writer….

This is true. but if you are dedicated to bring news to a community. Especially a specific community like the LGBT community, the news should be unbiased and the articles should be good…

There are other writers on UB who do a good job of this. They offer informative unbiased or semi-biased (using a professional approach to adding in there thoughts and opinions) stories, videos, pictures, articles, etc, which helps the LGBT community. I have not seen this from Kevin however. Generally when reading his articles as mentioned above, I see over exaggerations, situations blown out of proportion (Like this article), or just generally bad articles which seem to go against the LGBT agenda (also like this article).

When reading his articles I get the overwhelming feeling that he is worse more often than not then the people who he is writing about or the ignorant bigoted peopled out there who are against LGBT people. I am sure this is not something his is trying to convey to readers (at least I hope not) but I also know I am not the only one who feels this way. And as a member of the UB community and of the LGBT community, I feel we should still speak up about this issue whether it is a blog or not. Other impressionable people out there are reading these articles, LGBT readers or other, and they should understand that his articles do not reflect the actual opinion or feelings of all the LGBT community (In most or some cases). Because as mentioned many times, UB is the most popular site for LGBT information. And others judge the LGBT community based on that information provided. The quality of which since it reflects us (LGBT people and our cause), should be top quality and correct, and unbiased, and information.

Its a blog, not a news organization. You can’t change the meaning of a blog just because you don’t agree with its author, it often has nothing to do with journalism. yeah, it’s a blog, but as the most popular LGBT news-teller they sort of have a responsibility to be good, you know? because they represent our community as a whole. and then kevin comes up with these ridiculous titles and hyper-sensitive articles, and it makes the community look bad.

If it is a blog then why are they reporting LGBT news? This is more than just a blog, it is a blog and also news site, where the people posting articles on this site, show the latest LGBT news as well as there own person blogs on non-news related subjects. As meh2 said, because this is the most popular LGBT news blog, they should have a level of quality to the information they are giving us because it does essentially reflect the community as a whole.

Liked – and I definitely agree you have a point, but it seems more that they are doing it from a tourism standpoint rather than an equality standpoint. So I suppose I can see how it would be irritating to have a place legalise any sort of marriage that’s not going to be counted as legal in a person’s home country to generate a longer tourist season. I wouldn’t be pleased to have them trying to attract me with something like that on all kinds of travel sites.

I have to agree too, all the negative posts/headlines are pissing me off – and the “journalism” is almost non-existent. Then again, this is kind of a blog. And apparently actually journalism.

You know, even if it was just for a touristy reasons, I am not upset with them for doing it. I mean, seriously, even if it is just to bring in tourist and make more money, they are still offering LGBT people something they can’t get everywhere else. And that is a big plus in our direction because it shows other places other reasons to give LGBT people their rights besides the obvious fact that we deserve them. Because 9 times out of 10 most things come down to money in the end anyway. If other countries see it is more financially beneficial to let LGBT people marry in their own country instead of doing it in others, maybe they will be more willing to accept it into law.

Also true. I’m just worried that people will stop fighting the good fight here because it’s hard and ridiculous because they can take an actual vacation to a place that doesn’t suck and get married, whether it’s legal here or not after the fact.

Ahhh… See, now I understand what you mean.

Well… I guess on the plus side (which is kind of a downside) Even if they get married somewhere else, it wont be recognized here unless they keep fighting the good fight to have it legalized. So in some ways it is kind of good and bad. People can still experience that marriage as they want, but still in turn have to work for it to be recognized as legal back home.

Yup yup. Though there are a few companies giving rights to unmarried gay partners. So it’s a kind of “meh” feeling. (Of course we’re down one with Borders going bankrupt – they were one effed up company though, and I speak from experience.)
