Exodus International Leader Finally Admits Ex-Gay Therapy is Fraudulent

This is also the same guy who has commented that being gay is “for younger men” and that he didn’t feel he could be gay because of his “looks.” His views have always been skewed, and it was only a matter of time before he had to face the music. 

This admission came as part of Chambers’ participation in the Gay Christian Network’s annual conference which was held in Orlando last week (Exodus International’s back yard) and the lead-in is by Justin Lee the founder of the GCN organization.  It was a challenging ‘confrontation’ for many in that organization who have had bad experiences with Exodus and similar reparative therapy efforts but it was a wonderful opportunity to bridge some of the animosity between the accepting religious community and the often-combative reparative therapy community.

Doesn’t this sound like something for which he should be prosecuted?  Never mind the lives that he has ruined and opportunities he has destroyed for the victims.  What he engaged in is fraud!

Hello, I think this is a strategic confession in the face of better codes of ethics in psychotherapy practice across US and UK that have been shown to clearly prohibit the practices of ex-gay therapy, using as one, but only one of the many, breaches as making a false promise to a client regarding the outcome of therapy. They are now trying to say that rather than cure you of your gay-ness (internal experience of urges) they are curing you of your acting upon your gayness (spiritual weakness). This is why psychotherapy codes of ethics need to operate at a high level, that generalises the breach of ethics of any practice which is  prejudicial and pathologising on the grounds of gender and sexual diversity. Of course it’s easier in UK where you have an Equality Act which prohibits discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation. This article is focusing on only a snippet of dialogue that was taken away from a 2.5 hr long discussion. I was at the event where this conversation occurred and it would be unwise to take these statements at face value as presented here.  Alan, in no way, admits that Exodus is fraudulent but more so an ongoing process.  He still clings to the idea that he does not label himself “gay” – a fact that took up a long portion of the discussion for him to explain.  Use this article as a stepping stone to further research his discussion with Justin Lee of the Gay Christian Network.
