George Clooney Uses Golden Globes Win to Call out Mitt Romney’s Homophobia

Swoon.

George Clooney won big at the Golden Globes on Sunday evening for The Descendants. So what does a Hollywood golden boy use his press junket for?

Why, to call out Mitt Romney’s homophobia, of course.

Reporter: You’ve been very vocal lately about gay rights, and I was just curious, What’s your opinion of Mitt Romney since he appears to be the frontrunner for the Republicans and he’s been pretty anti-gay.

Clooney: “Well, I’m not much concerned until there’s an actual nominee…but I think it’s the wrong side of history. I think everyone sort of understands it might be the last leg of the civil rights movement. I do believe that. So I think that at some point, It’s certainly not the wedge issue it was in 2004, so that’s a good sign. So those are important things to me, I think.”

lots of respect for George, but in all honesty…this isnt the last leg of the civil rights movement..what about Transgendered rights? I know all of you cant sit back and deny that Trans issues are totally separate from the rest of the LGB…

I think it’s very important to include the “T” in “LGBT”. I like LGBTQ (questioning) even better. The message is one of inclusion. Let’s fight every individual case of discrimination and bigotry as it comes- we’re stronger together than apart.

last leg certainly not! there is still internailized Homophobia and Prejudice! Like sparse acceptance for beautiful transgendered people within our own community. Like the way African americans do not accept Gay and Lesbian African americans as important to the civil rights movements, discussions or remembered in Celebrations. We have gay republicans for fuchs sake! We have gay men who think that other gay men are too gay or flaming. We have lesbians who think that other lesbians are too butch! We have Gay christians who hate gay mormons who hates gay muslims.
We have a long way to go towards being accepted by organized religions and right wing fundamnetalists, but our journey towards love and acceptance must first begin with us, in our own backyards.

what makes you think we have to accepted by organized religions? They do have the right to exclude homosexuality from their churches if it is against their doctrine. However, they don’t have the right to force their religious views on the American people outside of their Church. If you want to fight against the Pope, be my guest. But you’re going to lose and rightfully so. It’s just as important that we respect their rights and beliefs if we want to be our rights to be respected as well.

I think by “last leg” he doesn’t mean the last leg until the wound is healed, I think he means the last leg of the journey to the hospital to heal the wound that lgbtq hatred has caused.

Your title makes it sound like Clooney’s acceptance speech at the ceremony was an impassioned diatribe that specifically enumerated and condemned Mitt Romney’s individual history with gay rights. What happened was that he intelligently, but briefly and vaguely, answered a direct question without getting too worked up about it. Good on’ya, George, but we probably coulda skipped a headline here.
