Epic Bible Family Tree Details Rape, Incest and Polygamy (But Very Little Sanctity)

Washington State today secured the critical 25th vote needed to make full marriage equality the law of the land, which provoked a familiar refrain from religious leaders obsessed with gay sex.

“The sanctity of marriage! Marriage is an institution older than government! Babies made outside of marriage go to hell! The Catholic Church totally just spent a billion dollars on a whale watching Groupon that expires the second two women legally marry in Seattle!”

We’ve all heard it before, and none of it with the exception of maybe that Groupon hold any merit here. Equality is about humanity’s responsibility toward itself. The mere fact that your tradition and stories have been passed down for a thousand years does not inherently make them true, or the only barometer for measuring morality.

And what’s more, as Jim Belote at the University of Minnesota points out with this absolutely epic Bible family tree, Christianity is a story full of incest, polygamy and rape.

Whoa.

David alone has 9 different “legitimate” marriages here. Rehoboam’s 60 daughters and 28 sons were the product of 18 wives and 60 concubines. The Bible boasts of King Solomon’s 700 wives and 300 concubines! These are hardly the only offenders here. Instead, marriages like this are the norm.

David’s eldest son Amnon raped his half-sister Tamar, provoking her husband (and full brother) Absolom to order Amnon’s death.

And the less said about who Cain and Seth made all of those babies with when their mother Eve was the only woman on Earth, the better.

I propose a flat rejection of the argument that Christianity preaches the sanctity of marriage. It doesn’t. The Bible is an old book littered with rape, polygamy, incest, infidelity, and the subjugation of women. Legislation condoning two consenting same-sex adults marrying isn’t just a necessity of the times – it would be one of the most moral and downright ethical things to ever happen to the institution of marriage.

The sanctity of Christian marriage is a joke, and a complete misnomer. Stop accepting this garbage as the truth. And by all means, go ahead and share the hell out of this one.

The old Testament isn’t about Christianity first of all it is the record of God’s people. Yeah there was lots of that immoral stuff going on and that’s why God flooded the earth…remember Noah and his family……God was trying to wipe out the evil in the world…people who couldn’t follow the rules…….then the people kept on not following the rules so he brought Christ hence the word Christianity. In the new testament you’ll notice that things sort of calmed down and people weren’t as immoral….however some were. You can’t pin what was done on all Christians..that’s just crap!! the only reason that many Christians don’t want marriage between same-sex persons is just the word….just the word marriage..there are many of us who don’t care who you sleep with, who you raise, what you teach in schools with regard to who invented what…but we don’t want to give up our word..it is very sacred to our relationship…and to blur that word is what we object to…yes there are radicals who say god hates fags but most of us Christians know better….God loves everybody just not how they act….He Knows there hearts!!! SO stop Lumping us all together cuz It really ticks those of us off who are REALLY trying to do the work of Christ!

No, the Old and New Testament god are the same god and the “prophets of the Old Testament say that God told them it was ok to invade a neighboring nation and slaughter all of the men and women and forcefully take the virgins as wives. There is no verse that condemns those Old Testament men who had several wives and concubines. And the New Testament, specifically does advocate the subjugation of women. All these things can be Googled if you don’t believe me. And your argument that you want to keep the word because it’s sacred is just ridiculous on so many levels. The push for same sex marriage is strictly for legal marriage. You can still believe marriage is what you believe it is once same sex couples have the legal right in your jurisdiction. And the fact that only you can have the word because it is sacred reveals exactly how you feel about homosexuals and their relationships. To you, those relationships are not worthy. Well, again, you and your church can keep believing and practicing that. That does not constitute a legal argument or an excuse to keep homosexual couples from a strictly legal marriage license.

i do not hate gay people that is their choice, just as i dont hate smokers that is their choice. i have 2 in my dad’s family.. let them have their legal rights, so they benefit with taxes and such… but these next statements are history facts believe it or not… marriage was only introduced by God to the earth to adam and eve for children to be born to a loving mother and father- boys to grow up to be rightious fathers and girls to grow into rightious mothers… and He only ment it to be for such… sex outside of the bond of marriage between man and wife is against the laws of God… most gay individual know that it is not God’s desire for us to CHOOSE to be gay or teach others or our children that it is not sin… (((((NO ONE IS BORN GAY NO MATTER WHAT THE WORLD SAYS. Ah! I can see someone (but probably not you, after all you’re just writing about it) read the Bible. Unfortunately, they forgot to use any sort of comprehension skills.
When the Bible mentioned all those relationships, it also talked about how those things caused trouble and lead people away from God. For instance, Solomon’s love for woman turned him away from God. God got outright angry at Solomon and laid out punishment for it. The Bible says it’s a lot because it was abnormal even at the time, but that wasn’t boasting. (1 Kings 11)
Nobody, praised Amnon for his sin. Rahoboam was a terrible king who did not follow God and under his kingship the country did evil things (1 Kings 12:22).
I wouldn’t say that was the norm, because it wasn’t. That, dear, is an outright lie. God only made one wife for Adam(Genesis 3:20) Noah had one wife, and he was considered the most righteous man in his time(Genesis 7:6). Job, who is described as a doing everything right and even the devil’s specific attentions couldn’t shake, had just one wife(the Book of Job). Moses was called a ‘friend of God’ and he had just one wife (Exodus 2:21, Exodus 33:11)

We hold grief against siblings marrying because the result is usually something like you. It’s pretty amusing that you talk of comprehension skills when you so readily cherry pick the rare passage to support what you want to say and ignore the bulk of what is actually in the “good book”. This statement gets right to the root of the issue of Christianity (and other religions) for me. When the Bible does not specifically address an issue, “assume” that you know the answer. How convenient. Well, this fill-in-the-blanks reasoning does not prove that Cain and Seth did not get it on with their mother. All you’ve done is proven that the Bible is open to interpretation, particularly by its followers.

What Christians (or Jews, or Muslims, or…) believe marriage to be or the ‘sanctity’ in which they hold it is IRRELEVANT. This is not a religious issue. This is a secular, legislative, and human right issue. If any religion doesn’t want to conduct same-sex wedding, that’s up to them and up to their respective congregations to change. Accordingly, their arguments should have no place in American politics. The defenses “this goes against God” and “the government thinks it knows better than God” are simply not valid. NO RELIGION has a right impose any of its tenets on the general population.

In general, the factions (religious and secular) that continue to vehemently battle against marriage equality are proving themselves to be hypocritical bigots.

just try to throw it out there that they used the word “sodomite” which

not wrong. It’s just pressing the acceptable social norms. Also, if you
believe that marriage is so damn sacred, then why don’t you ban
divorce? The right to marry is a human right, not a special right.
Homosexuals are no different that heterosexuals, other than the obvious
love attractions that each have.

It should be noted, julieg261, that marriage is not a Christian concept. Marriage existed before the existence of Judaism and Christianity and exists in most cultures where those two religions do not exist.
Furthermore, for most of human history, marriage was an economic relationship that joined the financial interests of two (or more) families. It had nothing to do with love or romance.
Also, in the United States, one is married by the state, not by the church. It is the state that gives a marriage license and the state that recognizes the union. Thus one can marry without going to a church, but one cannot marry without getting a license from the government.

Well, personally, I would love for divorces to be illegal except in the case of abusive spouses, and God does forbid homosexual ACTS. He say, you will not have sexual relationships with another man. He also tells us to have sexual purity, which means you only have sex with a person of the opposite gender and within a marriage. Also, the Bible has been translated many times, but the original Greek and Latin texts still exist, so it comes across the same.

Again. I’m SO GLAD I left that religion! I’ve always been a very logical person, and Christianity always confused me. I personally believe in a god, but not the same one in the bible. Technically the entire chart is based off of Judiaism, not Christianity. Christianity being the followers of Christ and the New Testament, not the Torah and Old Testament. Besides the chart is inaccurate as it is based on a biased view of Westernised Old Testament, and doesn’t contain any of the names mentioned in biblical apocrytha or Eastern Orthodox Old Testament, many of which mention the names of the daughters and other sons of Adam and Eve, Cain’s wives and children, and other members of pre-deluvian society that were not directly associated with the origins of the tribes of Israel.
