Out Troops in Afghanistan Do It Gets Better (And It’s a Good One!)

It gets better. And dusty. It also gets dusty.

The sun has pretty much set on the It Gets Better Project’s total cultural saturation. The enormous collection of videos will live online beyond the next Rapture scare, sure, but the days of a new A-list celebrity dropping a video each day are well behind us.

Which turns out to be a good thing. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with Kathy Griffin or President Obama telling gay youth that it gets…you know. It’s just that videos like this one, created by out gay and lesbian military troops perfectly hits the cultural cornerstone that IGB was created to spotlight.

One year ago, this video would have been illegal. Illegal, y’all. Steven, Shelise, Erin, James and Curtis would have been dishonorably discharged from the military for even talking about making a video like this.

Featuring (in order of appearance): SSGT Steven Procter, SSGT Shelise Harmon, AT2 Erin Jones, SPC James Velazquez, SPC Curtis Robinson.

It’s not the most polished IGB video we’ve ever seen (Why are the letters on that sign not colored in, guys?), but it is definitely the best one we’ve seen in a long time.

Thank you to the men and women who can now proudly and honestly serve their country.

Perhaps I missed it; …. where does it say/show any of the people in the video are gay and not just supportive? Could just as easily been moved to make/post the video because another gay teen committed suicide because of bullying recently.

oh my god, I will spare you the book, but yes, even the sheer vicious gossip, lie, feeling or suggestion that someone was gay would lead to FULL ON INVASIVE INVESTIGATION INTO THEIR LIFE. emails subpoenaed, phone records and calls, neighbors, friends and family interviewed. They’d even ‘out’ soldiers who weren’t even gay because they were under investigation. I’m reminded of John McCain repeating “it’s not the policy, it’s not the policy” in complete denial that this invasion of privacy happens and how “don’t ask don’t tell” really meant “finding out wether you like it by asking everyone you know and telling everybody” it was the worst thing to ever happen to the military, cost millions of dollars to run constant multi-year long investigations, and cost tens of thousands of soldiers and their families their livelyhood, pensions, dishonorable discharges, college degrees, paychecks, not to mention the loss of their talents as members of the armed services.

I still see the end of DADT as something incredible. I honestly never thought I’d see the day when it would be lifted, and now its been five months where out LGBT defenders of freedom are actually fighting for their own as well.

I find it to be embarassing to be American when we of all races and gay gender can’t defend our own country. And our deficit is in the trillions. Look at all the gold in fort Knox. And the king’s crown of Budapest, Hungary sits in Fort Knox. I’m an Hungarian-American and feel about that too. It’s to blame all countries that won’t let both genders fight. Let the Gay’s fight for what is their’s. GOD is our defender and pray that we win cause in the end the Gay Christian will,as well as the non-Christians will win. We are free!

yes? wait what? Um I’m not trying to be snarky but you did know that DADT was repealed, and that the U.S. Military does enlist males and females? maybe I missed your point.
