Brad Pitt Says He Can’t Wait Any Longer, Despite Pledge to Wait for Marriage Equality

You probably don’t need reminding that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie famously pledged to postpone their wedding day until LGBT Americans were able to legally marry. Hurrah! A trophy! LGBT Allies of the year! Etc.

But what’s this?

He oscillates, too, on the subject of whether he’ll get married, and it’s clear Pitt has shifted from his promise that this won’t happen until gay marriage is legalized. “We’d actually like to,” he says of his seven-year partner, Jolie, “and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out.

It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.” Has he asked Jolie to marry him? “I’m not going to go any further,” says Pitt. “But to be in love with someone and be raising a family with someone and want to make that commitment and not be able to is ludicrous, just ludicrous.”

Shucks.

I’d lick to nip any and all cussing or condemning this incredible ally in the bud right from the start here. Few stars of Brad’s caliber have dared to stand with our community like he has.

But I have to ask, does Brad’s wavering promise to wait until gays and lesbians can wed bum you out? Is his promise to millions of Americans enduring marriage discrimination trumped by his children’s wishes for their parents?

It means a lot to the kids that their parents get married…

How about the millions of other children with LGBTQ parents? I’m sure it means a lot to them as well, yet no matter how much their parents “can’t wait” any longer, they have no choice BUT to wait…

I personally don’t expect allies to make themselves and their families miserable for the sake of politics or sending a message. There’s enough misery among those of us who can’t legally marry yet.

The gesture was well-meaning, but he shouldn’t have to put politics over his own family and I can’t see how anyone would be too angry about this. I find all of this celebrity gossip abhorrent and not really my concern, but by raising this issue in this way, he continues the conversation among the cloistered, suburban drones who need to hear it; they’re the ones following tabloids most obsessively, I think. Breaking his pledge in this way makes more of a statement than tacitly continuing it. It’s rather win-win.

I don’t think that this decision shows any less support towards the LGBT community. Most people will find that when you have a family and you have children, their best interests come first and parents will do whatever they can to make them happy. I think we can all understand this. It’s not as if the equal rights of the LGBT community are slowly showing u on the horizon, we have them in our grasp, and I’m sure that if the two of them DO get married, it will not make them any less supportive of the community which they so fiercely support.

The right to marry is a wonderful thing, and people who have it already should feel free to take advantage of it. I’ve heard of straight couples who actually took time during their weddings to talk about their support for marriage equality, and how everyone should have the right to marry as they do. I wouldn’t expect any less from Brad Pitt, supportive gent that he is.

I would have to say, as painful as it may seem to some people, the children need to come first. He can still be a vocal supporter for LGBT Marriage Equality.

Being a parent I can understand the pressure children can bring to bear, especially when they grab onto an idea and won’t let it go. Considering they have 6 of the little nose-miners pressuring them, it might get to be too much to stand up to.

Personally I think we are so close to legalized marriage for everyone that it’s ok to cut Brad & Angelina some slack.

He can get married in DC. We have marriage equality here (sort of – I’m well aware that a DC marriage license doesn’t give a same-sex couple the same rights on the federal level).

When I first heard Brad say this, my gut response was, “Don’t put your commitment issues on me, Brad. If you want to get married, do it. You can still fight for gay rights as a straight married man.” And I feel the same way now. Brad and Angelina getting married AND continuing to say that all loving couples deserve to do the same is a powerful statement (perhaps moreso than not being married like it’s no big deal – because to many couples, it’s a huge deal).

It is a huge Claim and promise to make, and with the way this country seems to be going and the people we have running for president why should he have to wait another four or more years to get married. I don’t think less of him for “breaking” his pledge, I just think the argument is ridiculous. Don’t use “it means a lot to your kids” as an excuse. It’s great to raise awareness and show your support. Heck, the fact that they waited this long already is great. I just don’t like the way he phrased it, but I suppose it’s tough to word otherwise.

Despite one’s beliefs and convictions, what matters most (and should matter most) is one’s own family. I wouldn’t want the Pitt’s to deny themselves and their children the security and joy that my family — thanks to the new York Legislature — now enjoys.

When you have children I suppose that changes things. I have friends who want children & can’t adopt them because they are gay, I have friends who can’t get married because they are gay. My boyfriend & I have been together six years we have no children & we won’t get married till everyone can. It bothers me & him that very loving & wonderful people can’t adopt children who need love & can’t get married to those they love.

I think everyone with intelligence thought the gay marriage issue would have been resolved already. I don’t hold it against Brad, he’d be waiting 50 years to get married if things keep going the way they are. The fact that he is such a strong ally to the LGBTQ community is so much more important than getting fitted for a ball & chain.

I think Brad and Jolie should hold out … after all … if they do restrain themselves they will actually know HOW it feels to not be able to marry the one you love! Maybe the pain will help them get even more behind the idea and start putting some of their money and power behind the push for equal rights! I agree with most of the posts here. My considered husband and I have chosen to not marry. Our 11 year old daughter understands this. But it is our choice. My Brother and his husband became legally married on the 10 year anniversary of thier original commitment ceremony. I applaud Brad and Angelina for thier stance and sentimate. While I do believe the “personal is political” meaning we have to let people know who we are for change to happen, I do not believe that being political should effect our personal lives and persuit of happiness. If they want to marry the “community” and gossip columnists should not stop them any more than our government and right wing politicians should stop same sex couples from marrying.

I’ve always considered that “We’re not getting married until everyone can” stance to be petulant, childish and ultimately pointless. The American government doesn’t give a shit no matter what your reason for not marrying. In fact, the longer a couple’s ‘protest’ goes on, the more money in Uncle Sam’s pocket since they have to file taxes separately. Ultimately this ‘promise’ means nothing, does nothing, and changes nothing, so who cares if Brad decides to marry Angelina? Unless they are actively campaigning for LGBTQ rights, like Lady Gaga, Cyndi Lauper, or George Takei, nothing they do really affects the struggle one way or the other.

This saddens me. I do understand that they want to get married and that it is important to their children. However, I think making a statement and standing up for what you believe in is also important. This is a chance to teach their children a valuable lesson about the importance of civil rights. If they back down now it will be like saying, “This issue isn’t as important to us as we thought”. It’s also an excellent chance to teach their children skills like integrity, empathy and perseverance.

They have made their point waiting this long, and same sex marriage is legal in a number of states. Really, as parents they should do what’s best for their children. It’s what good parents do. i think their thoughts of waiting were well meaning, but noone can blame them if they want to do so. They have a family and are very much in love. We’re fighting for everyone’s right to be married. Everyone’s. That said if they choose to get married sooner. May they be blissfully happy in that endeavor.

i think he and Angie should explain the importance of a promise, why its made and why it should be kept. Brad made a great promise that should be kept to show his word is still good and to show his support for something he believes strongly in. I personally think that, despite his pledge, he should get married. First of all his first and ONLY duty is to his family. He shouldn’t have to answer to any one of us or any other person out there. He can still “fight” for us when he and Angelina are married. What right do we have to say “Sorry, Brad, but until EVERY single person in the LGBT community is able to marry, you can’t get married yourself, because that would be selfish and you’d be breaking your promise.
