Don’t Say Gay Bill Author Claims AIDS is Impossible to Transmit via Heterosexual Sex

Tennessee GOP State Senator Stacey Campfield is best known for being the ignoramus that foisted the Don’t Say Gay Bill upon his state, which would make any mention that homosexuality even exists in a school illegal – but he certainly seems hellbent on adding a new asterisk to his credentials.

In a radio interview with Michelangelo SIgnorile, Campfield today rattled off a laundry list of incredibly dangerous misinformation about HIV and AIDS.

“Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community — it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall.”

“My understanding is that it is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex…very rarely [transmitted].”

Ladies and gentlemen, this is an elected official who took an oath of office to serve the interests of the people in his district boasting that it is impossible for his straight constituents to contract HIV.

Campfield should be thrown, not just laughed, out of office effective immediately. We already knew he was a homophobic menace putting LGBT youth at risk, but now we know he’s also a public health risk.

wow for one they dont really know how HIV came about….one of the most logical theories (to me at least) they have is that hunters would eat the meat of chimps that were infected with a different strain that mutated once it was in a human…..and from there you can guess how it was transmitted from person to person….

Yes, it’s widely called the “cut hunter” theory and refers to blood transmission during the butchering or field cleaning process. NPR’s Radiolab discussed it in great detail in their “Patient Zero” episode.

That level of ignorance is irresponsible and dangerous. Everything he said is a blatant lie. And I don’t know the exact statistics, but I’m pretty sure that while anal sex does carry a slightly higher risk of transmission than vaginal sex (it matters not, of course, whether the anus in question is male or female), heterosexual women are the population showing the most rapid increase in new cases. It’s nowhere near “virtually impossible” and it’s terrifying that someone might look to him for information and be given that line of bs.
