FF: Pitt, Silverman and Santorum
In this week’s Friday Freakout, I’m yappin’ about Brad Pitt’s Marriage Promise, Silverman’s Ugly Mark and Santorum’s Bile – but not in that order!
We’ve seen a plethora of anti-gay messages come from the Republican primary campaign trail, so it was really no surprise when Santorum’s Florida campaign manager said that gays make God vomit. It points to a narrative going on in a significant portion of this country that demonizes gay people, however, and so it’s important to keep airing these terrible words.
It is equally important to connect how the presidential campaign ties into the fight against marriage discrimination. This is a very familiar civil rights battle, often likened to the black civil rights movement in the 1960s. And yet, when Brad Pitt mentioned this week that he might not be able to wait to get married any longer, everyone seemed sympathetic.
While we truly appreciate and respect the Jolie-Pitts for their seven year commitment to wait for complete marriage equality, we ask them not to abandon us just yet. Plenty of us have children that want us to get married, and many more simply want to marry the person they live. Stick with us!
And if you needed a bit of a reminder, look no further than the 2010 interview with Sarah Silverman where she compared getting married despite marriage discrimination to joining a country club in the ’60s that didn’t allow blacks or Jews as members. Fight for us, and we will be forever grateful!
