Court Fines Man for Calling for ‘Another Hitler to Exterminate Those Fags’ on Facebook

There’s free speech, and then there’s this guy.

The Lithuania Gay League reports that the man, 37, was handed down a fine of 1560 Lithuanian litas after they alerted authorities to his post.

He had commented under an article on Facebook about Lady Gaga’s criticism of the Lithuanian Government.

He wrote: “What we need is another Hitler to exterminate those fags ‘cause there’s just too many of them multiplying.”

Lithuania, like much of Europe, tempers the right to free speech with strict harmful rhetoric laws, effectively drawing a line in the sand between the freedom to say whatever you like and whatever you like to say promoting hate crimes, violence, and criminal behavior. Unsurprisingly, the court decided that mining one’s social networks for a potential mass murderer to kill off 75 million people or so fell into the latter of these two categories.

Many thanks to Lithuania for keeping all of our newsfeeds free of Facebook homophobia. Nobody wants to see that.

Absolutely they made the right call and fined that fucker! If I get a charge and fined for possessing weed then that dude should be fined for threatening our community! I ABSOLUTELY disagree! One of the key elements of society should be free speech. The concept they use to fine $600 for anti-gay speech today, could very easily be the same concept used to fine you for your pro-gay speech tomorrow.

While you have a valid point and I agree with you, I think this had more to do with the hate crime and the fact that the man was calling for another genocide. The world still hasn’t gotten over it’s last genocide, we definitely don’t need another one. Ever.

Ignorance or not… his right to say what he said is exactly that, his right; it isn’t a right if some entity can arbitrarily take it away when they deem it to be against what they use as their moral framework.

I don’t agree with him (with being gay myself and all), I just think it’s a dangerously fine line to walk, that of freedom of speech and hate speech:

Somebody calling for a new Hitler to exterminate the gays is in my opinion, borderline at best without any indication of conviction.

Somebody standing in the street handing out leaflets telling people to *actually* harm gay people (or anyone else for that matter) IS hate speech.

A tweet / status update / off-hand comment made (either in jest or from a position of conviction) is immaterial, unless it’s actively inciting something I think we need to back off.

How long do you think it will be until these things extend to every potentially “hateful” comment, imagine the backlash if we were told somebody was fined / jailed for posting from the line at McDonald’s “God, please send us a new Hitler who hates fatties; that way the queue at McDonald’s would be so much nicer”.

And I’m not equating hating fat people with hating gays / black people / trans people (etc), but the framework of hate speech and freedom of speech make no such distinction.

There is nothing wrong with free speech, but when you make mention of a man who committed horrible atrocities against his fellow man, then that is crossing the line. When your comments are meant to discriminate, harm, or destroy someone, then it is not okay.

Freedom of speech does not give you the right to say what you want.
Inciting violence based upon religion, race, gender and sexual orientation should be illegal. Because such things often leads to mob justice and is a canvas for criminal elements to murder and instigate corrective rape. Americans say what you want attitude is a fallacy. No wonder your people have trouble getting married because you let idiots rile up groups by appealing to their general hatred and giving it focus based on nothing but emotions.

There is a difference between disagreeing and making a case against a position and calling for people to be murdered beaten and violated. The difference is between being civilized and flaring hatred.

Many massacres have happened in the world because of people being aloud to say what they want. And even in america when they murder a gay, those criminals know that out there is a big crowd of god loving people who cheer for getting rid of an evil fag.
