Anti-Gay Pastor: I Play Football to Legally Hurt White People

Pastor Ken Hutcherson: Good Christian, man of god, raging homophobe, racist sports enthusiast, etc.

Pastor Ken Hutcherson is one of the most outspoken critics of gay marriage in Washington State. Just last week he put out a press release touting his new position as the chairman of the Stand For Marriage Coalition, and then quickly came under fire after it was discovered that his website claimed Christians must kill their enemies.

Our favorite Hutcherson quote though has got to be the one about gay marriage being a cobra sent to kill straight people.

Hutcherson is back in the news today, not so much for his rampant homophobia, but this time for his racism.

Hutcherson testified before the Washington State House Judiciary Committee before the vote to advance the state’s gay marriage bill:

I was born and raised in Alabama where blacks and whites didn’t get along very well, and I tried being one of the main reasons they didn’t. I was extremely discriminatory towards whites. The only reason I played football so I could hurt white people legally.

Yikes. Come for the racism and violent rhetoric, but by all means stay for Hutcherson telling legislators that “not even Michael Jackson could get out of being black!”

Technically, this pastor can’t be racist, since racism refers to the institutional prejudice of society, and we really don’t have that against white people. I think prejudice or discrimination was the word you wanted. But regardless of semantics, this seems like an unChristian thing to do. Was he talking about it as something he used to do and has now repented of? I can respect that, if it’s the case. It doesn’t look like he plays a lot of football anymore.

Rachel….How can racism refer “to the instutional prejudice of society”, yet you think “prejudice” would be a better word? Please don’t accept the behavior of someone who openly admits his hatred of ANYONE simply because you have race in common. That’s….stupid…and makes you look really, really small-minded. Brighton – I know you are really steeped in this “reverse racism” victimhood but it makes you look like an idiot. I say bullshit. Racism is racism no matter what color skin you have. If a white person who says something in a degrading manner against a person of color, than it’s racism. If you’re a person of color, and you say something degrading to a white person than it’s racism. No matter who you are, no matter what your ethnic background is, if you say something degrading, say a racial slur, make the person feel inferior because of their ethnicity then it’s racism.

I don’t care what happened in the past, it’s past. We can’t do anything about it, but learn from it and better ourselves. My dad side of the family is really racist, and I thank God every day we don’t have anything to do with them. (Not because of that, but of really bad family history.) And my dad raised my sister and I not to judge people because of their skin color.

We can’t sit here and say “Oh blacks have the right to say degrading stuff because our ancestors made their ancestors slaves, blah blah blah” … our ancestors did that. We didn’t .. and their ancestors were slaves .. they’re not. That card has been worn out and played long enough. It’s time people took responsibility for their actions and not use the “blacks were once slaves” crap. Like I said; It’s in the past, what we can do now is learn from it and better ourselves.

Are you actually suggesting that we live in post-racial America? Good thing all of that racism ended when they passed the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Plus – Barack Obama is President – that means that there is no racism in America and that systemic oppression and white privilege does not exist (all of those disparities in everything from education, incarceration, homelessness, unemployment, maternal mortality, etc, etc, etc – have nothing to do with persistent institutionalized racism). If people of color (who are disproportionately poor) would just work harder and want success more then they can pull themselves up by their bootstraps then they could finally stop complaining about “racism”. We are all working on a level playing field. Resources in the world are unlimited – scarcity is not an issue – so just because the system distributes a greater share of resources and opportunities to white people doesn’t mean that people of color can’t go out and find some more resources and opportunities. In fact – do you know who is really oppressed in this country? White people. White people do make up the vast majority of people in Congress and in high level federal, state, and local government positions. They also run most of the large and small corporations in this country. And make up the vast majority of law enforcement agents. Yes, white people make more money, are more likely to be employed, own their home and have a longer life expectancy. But white people have to EARN everything they get. They don’t ask for handouts from the government. All of the accumulated wealth and privilege that came from generations of colonization and slavery and Jim Crow all vanished and now affirmative action and welfare queens are taking our hard earned stuff! That is why the Tea Party is so great – it is a Party for white people who work really hard and don’t ask for handouts. I can’t wait until they pass more Gay Rights legislation – then homophobia will go away… it will be awesome… No more discrimination!!!

Everyone needs to chill. Serenity was just saying that those people who seek progress must make progress happen to move forward. That won’t happen if we continue to focus on yesterday. If you see an injustice? make it explode, blow it away, and take your place in the rubble and rebuild. Your boss doesn’t like your skin color? Find the proof and get his butt fired. It’s not easy, nothing ever is if it’s worth the trouble. Just do it, no one is stopping you. Actually, as someone who studies sociology specifically dealing with race, gender, and sexuality, Rachel is correct. Racism as an act or theory can only be carried out by the race in power against minority races. Racism refers to institutionalized discrimination and prejudice in the sense that black people or other people of color are at a social and cultural disadvantage because of the fact that they are not the race in power. That doesn’t mean that people of color can’t be discriminatory or prejudiced, because obviously they can, but as a white person your rights and securities aren’t going to be threatened because of your race. As the majority, you experience protections that people of color do not necessarily have. If any other race held the seat of power in government, law, or economics, only then white people would be in danger of racism.

I second Rachel’s comment regarding the improper use of the word racism. While I can’t understand the experience of being a person of color – especially a young black man in Alabama – I can sympathize with him regarding having a lot of anger – my sympathy does not extend to affirming violence as an acceptable method for dealing with anger.

if i read the article correctly, this man who appears to be in his mid 50′s to mid 60′s said that he USED to play football to legally hurt white people. even though I can’t condone his actions of Violence against someone because of their race, you have to understand that Alabama 40-50 years ago was a much different place and time than it is today. That being said I think it’s irresponsible for this website to blatantly misquote this man to make it appear as if this is something that he did yesterday. I clicked on this article because the headline was “I play football to legally hurt white people.” which is clearly not what he said. While i do disagree with most of his beliefs, I believe that if you plan on discrediting this man by misquoting him that you are no better than he is. Also in response to people saying the he can’t be a racist; He most certainly can be racist. Racism has nothing to do with social status, power, or influence. the poorest man in America can be a racist. Black and other minorities are just as capable of being racist as Whites.

I totally agree, I think it is really irresponsible for the website to misquote him in the present tense of his past tense statement. I can relate to him as a queer person of color (mixed heritage) I suffered from homophobia from my mother, and racism from my father, I held a deep anger towards white people for a very long time because of that, but I try my best not to anymore, I learned to accept things, and move on to more positive thinking. People can change their views, and if a person can admit that they did something they are not proud of in the past, that is the first step. Let’s hope that he can put whatever his issue is with LGBTQ folks aside and change his views on the LGBTQ community

I agree with Brighton to an extent. While im not excusing the Pastor’s Admitted PAST Racism, I do understand how a Black child growing up in the Racist South of the 50′s and 60′s where white children were raised to believe that they were naturally superior to blacks and therefore entitled to a better way of life, could come to be a Racist. Brighton you are acting as if the Racial tension of that time was some sort of family feud where both side bare equal blame, when in reality the Racist of the black people of that time was a result of hundreds of years of being treat as sub-humans in this country. I can’t even bring myself to watch the video, but just based on what I read, this kind of bigotry just turns my stomach. This guy is a disgrace to the human race. Being mixed race, I’ve grown up in an environment comprised of several cultures, ethnic backgrounds and races.

I hope that in my lifetime, we will embrace calling ourselves Americans in this country. If you’re born in Italy, you’re Italian. If you’re born in France, you’re French. If you’re born in England, you’re English.

But somehow, we have to add another identifier to our heritage here. Why is that? I don’t identify with people like this supposed Pastor. I don’t look at the color of someone’s skin. I’m happy to know people from other places and I’m definitely happy to be an American. I just wish all of us could feel that way.

I echo Rachel’s position, since racism is a peculiar thing that only hurts victims of racism, and as White people are the beneficiary it is not possible for anti white sentiment to be equated with racist sentiment, it does exist as prejudice however. It is a conservative right wing idea that White people can even be victims of racism, while we (I’m White) are in fact beneficiaries. It is also not fair to to credit the attitude of the man’s past with his present, it’s fair to believe he repents of that past.

Of course it is fair to credit his current anti Gay statements as bigoted and stupid, because while I may be a winner in light of racism as a White man, I’m a victim of severe prejudice as a Gay White man..

You really need to look up the definition of the word. Anyone one can be a victim or perpetrator of racism and the idea that a group is somehow immune to the stigma of being the racist because they are not part of the majority group is just a sign that you are a guilt-ridden apologist. And no, I’m not White. (Personally, I find it rather disturbing that you feel the need to capitalize the word.) As for racism only hurting the victims, I think you are wrong there too. In my view, being an ignorant asshat is pretty damaging to yourself and your descendants, not to mention society as a whole. The issue is that I am a beneficiary of White Privilege. Because I am White, when I was a kid doing poorly in school, I wasn’t ‘slow’, I was ‘underachieving’. And as you go through a day take the time to notice how many people of color hold ANY job, they do but they are a greater minority at work than they are in population. About 1/2 of all Black men are in jail for drug related crimes, when White people are as likely drug users and sellers.

You’re not wrong, but it is because of the reality of racism in America that distinguishing anti white racism as racism, it is more a lie than a truth because the racism White people experience and that African American’s experience are of such tremendous difference of degree. It invites the conclusion that racism directed to White people is the same thing as racism against Black people, and they are not comparable at all.

Sure, White people are victims as a function of being beneficiaries of most racism. Quite simply, Black Pride, Gay Pride, Latino Pride…are all positive and good things. But White Pride – it’s a thing of HATE. And if nothing else, this proves my point.

There’s nothing racist in what he said. So what if he tackled a few white kids back in the day in racist Alabama. My mom told me that her uncle worked in a white restaurant with black servants. Her uncle would spit inside the barrel with the pickles just because he hated working for the white people back then because they treated black people terribly. We all know so many stories of this. So why is it a problem now just because a homophobic pastor shared his own experiences?

O wow, the ignorance grows strong in this comment section. It is quite depressing. I am black and find it hilarious that some think Black people CAN’T be racist, they most assuredly can. I grew up in a predominantly black neigborhood and only about 20 white kids total in my school. In this place they were the minority and for that they were sometimes targeted. Racism goes both ways. I am not saying that remnants from this country’s foundation are not the cause of it but its still nevertheless….WRONG!!!!

My college roommate, white guy, used to say racist things back in his home town of upstate NY where the ratio of blacks was like 2 for every 100 white person. Then he moved here to VA and he was a minority, learned that the majority of racial stereotypes are not true, and that of course many of us are up standing ppl. He became one of my best friends. Then of course a group of un provoked black guys robbed him at gun point :/, further perpetuating stereotypes that I have tried so hard to diminish in his mind.

I have had my own more personal run ins with racism. I live and work in very ritzy area of Virginia Beach. High military influx and with my job I get a lot of dirty looks like “what is he doing in a place like this?”. Racism exists so how about we all grow up, acknowledge it, and learn to move away from it.
