Couple Murdered for Unfriending Woman on Facebook

We’ve all been down that road before. A glass or two of wine on a Saturday night, checking in with pals via Facebook status updates, noticing we’ve been unfriended, rushing out to murder the unfrienders…

Hold up. What?!

Billy Clay Payne, Jr. and Billie Jean Hayworth were killed last month after they deleted Jenelle Potter, the daughter of one of the suspects, from their “friends” list. Both were shot in the head and the man had his throat cut.

The couple’s 8-month-old baby was in the mother’s arms, unharmed, when the bodies were found.

Marvin Enoch “Buddy” Potter Jr., 60, and Jamie Lynn Curd, 38, were each charged on Wednesday in Mountain City in northeastern Tennessee (Where else?) with two counts of first-degree murder. The men were arrested on Tuesday.

Ugh. And if you think this is the only Facebook-related felony, think again. Facebook crimes have been reported in Texas, Tennessee and Iowa – domestic violence for a wife not “liking” her husband’s status, harassment after being “blocked,” and arson after defriending, respectively.

Yikes.

Our thoughts are with that poor baby who will now grow up without parents. Ladies and gentleman, if you feel murderous Facebook rage swelling within you, step away from the computer.

A baby whose parents died, coupled with the murderer’s last name being Potter… is it horrible I imagined this as some grotesque sequel to the Harry Potter series?

Um…just because they unfriended the daughter of a suspect doesn’t mean that was the motive…maybe it was something else, and the unfriending just happened to precede it. Just because I’m farting doesn’t mean its because of those pistachios I ate.

In regard to the facebook murder of the couple. I don’t think people really respect the degree that facebook affects lives. I think there is to much apathy about privacy. This killing is one reason why there should be not be guns everywhere.

Dude! It’s Facebook! If you feel your blood pressure rising because of a social network, you know that you’ve spent way too much time on it. Perhaps the best course of action is to delete your account and go outside and join the real world

i’m a big fan of UB! but i’m not a big fan of the parenthetical reference (“Where else?”) in the post. i’m originally from northeast TN. it’s by no means perfect and full of crazy folks. but the same is true for every other place. what is also true is that it’s a beautiful place full of amazing folks.
UB does a lot to dismantle negative imagery surrounding the GLBTQ community. please honor all people and places by not perpetuating stereotypes of other populations.
