Matt Bomer Comes Out as Gay, Partnered Father of Three

Matt Bomer: Card-carrying official homosexual

Professional sexpot – or actor, whatever – Matt Bomer is one of those Hollywood folks who people say is gay in hushed whispers instead or matter-of-fact inside-voices. But those days are over.

Bomer used a New Generation Arts and Activism Award win from the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards to officially come out. He’s gay, he’s partnered, and he’s a father of three!

Said the beaming recipient, “I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”

In addition to a spot on Glee, Bomer can also be seen in the upcoming male stripper true story, Magic Mike, alongside Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and True Blood’s Joe Manganiello. Woof.

I swear I thought he was out already. Like seriously, my friends and I never used whispers to talk about his being gay, so I assumed it was un-refuted common knowledge.

It’s sad that here we are in 2012, and people still feel the need to either “come out”, or others just label it as “coming out” when a gay person publicly acknowledges their same-sex spouse. When are we finally going to get to a time when we just are who we are from the start?

He has been out for a while. He just never made a big deal or put out a press release or anything like some do. It’s a nice change to see someone simply live his life and not feel the need to come out like that.

I think everyone knew, but he never publicly acknowledged it until now, that I know of. I’ve seen many photos of him with his kids, but not a single one ever referred to them as HIS kids…. just “Matt Bomer with these unidentified adorable little boys.”

There was gossip and yammering a long time ago that pre-White Collar, it was actually in his contract with whatever show he was on then that he couldn’t be public about it, for fear that it would damage his appeal to women, or his ability to play straight roles, or some such nonsense. I have no idea if there is any truth to that, of course.

First time I saw him was on White Collar. Three minutes in, I knew. Two minutes after that, he had my vote as sexiest guy on tv. I have no problem finding him believable in his role, nor does it make him any less sexy. I’m happy to see him very openly celebrating his beautiful family.

It’s not a “coming-out speech”, but it’s a lovely and touching declaration to his (male) partner and their kids. Also his mention on how being an actor in HW while belonging to a minority is (Diahann Carroll’s words that had an impact on him) was almost equally moving.

Ditto to others’ comments here. Matt has been quietly out but it is pretty easy to find snaps of him and his family on line. He is another great demonstration of how a good looking gay actor can play a role that has nothing to do with his sexuality. Right on Matt…I am dyng to see the new movie.

Gay people need to stop making a big deal about “coming out.” Everyone is always waiting for the next person to come out. We are always wondering if so and so is gay or not. It’s time to relax and just be whoever we are, and this does not mean gay. I consider myself SGL (Same Gender Loving) I no longer call myself gay because I realized there are so many other parts of me that have nothing to do with my sexuality, and “gay” was never a pleasant word for me growing up, even though many gay men convince themselves it’s wonderful to be gay. We all don’t have to come out to please the world’s suspicions. I hope one day when young men come out and tell whoever, it’s as simple as Matt Bomer’s speech. “Hey Mom and Dad I really like mint chocolate chip ice cream, oh and I like guys too.” It’s less heavy and simply stating a fact. We can all learn from this man’s speech and educate younger SGL men and women, to stop making it such a big deal. It will help everyone have less anxiety and fear if we just say what we like and call it a day…WITHOUT the LABELS.
