I’ve seen these “one big picture made out of little pictures” before–is there a particular software of website that automates this?

Website, not that I’ve seen. (You’d have to upload a metric fuckton of pictures first!) But there are a plethora of desktop applications (and most likely Photoshop and other image-software plugins, as well) for performing the task, yes. (Nobody actually sits and does this stuff individually / manually, at least once you pass the couple-hundred component images level of detail.) It’s the sort of thing computers are far better suited to, anyway.

Basically, you just hand the tool a destination image, and as large a collection of potential component images as possible, and it grinds on all the combinations. The more, and more varied, images you provide to be used as components, the better and more accurate the results. (And the longer it takes. But really, aren’t these exactly the sort of dreams computers are meant to be having, while their humans sleep?)

The result (like above) is most commonly referred to as a “photomosaic”, any software/app/plugin/algorithm/overpriced-consulting-firm-service that bills itself as being/having/offering a “photomosaic generator” would have some level of ability to create one. Which would be some level of satisfactory.

This was some level of overly detailed, I realize. Some level of apologies.
