New Mexico Governor’s Hairstylist Refuses to Do Her Hair Over Anti-Gay Politics

Susana Martinez: WHAT?!

New Mexico’s Republican Governor Susana Martinez is looking a fright this week. Homegirl’s anti-gay political stances have finally gotten the best of her.

Her hairstylist refuses to tame her mane until she changes her bigoted ways!

Antonio Darden, a popular stylist who runs Antonio’s Hair Studio in Santa Fe, said he cut Martinez’ hair three times, but that’s it – unless she changes her mind about gay marriage.

“The governor’s aides called not too long ago, wanting another appointment to come in,” Darden said. “Because of her stances and her views on this I told her aides no. They called the next day, asking if I’d changed my mind about taking the governor in and I said no again.”

The governor has said she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman, and that does not cut it with Darden.

“I think it’s just equality, dignity for everyone,” the popular hair stylist said. “I think everybody should be allowed the right to be together. My partner and I have been together for 15 years.”

Oh snap! Props to Antonio Darden for sticking it to his famous client and sticking up for LGBT rights at the same time.

We looove this story! We suggest that the Governor and all of those who wish ill against us change their tune. Without the LGBT community you’d all be walking around in burlap sacks with your eyebrows braided into your armpits.

I agree. If more things like this happened, everyone who is anti-gay/anti-equality would have a real eye-opening experience. The GLBT community is not just just some radical group of a few deviants – they are people who work, pay taxes, and keep this country going just as much as anyone else. It always surprises me when a woman is not for equality.

Sadly not all women realize that when they vote for any type of inequality, they’re working against themselves as well. This is a problem in the Caucasian female groups especially, (that I’ve seen at least). Perhaps because we’re shielded from the realities of being a ‘minority’ within that community, while the patriarchal bullshit is sold to us as a nonnegotiable fact of life.

I can’t help but imagine the positive impact it might have if gay hair stylists and their allied coworkers were to respond to known bigots this way. I know it would certainly hit home in my community. Nothing a southern women fears more than a bad hair day and a dose of shame!

This is the theory behind the push for everyone – but gay celebs especially – to come out. I can’t even believe how many people I’ve met who gave told me I’m the first gay person they’ve ever met. No, I’m not, you just didn’t know because they didn’t say anything.
