Madonna Goes Full Robot With New Single, “Girl Gone Wild”

Hot on the heels of her epic Super Bowl halftime performance, Madonna mania is picking up. I was kind of disappointed with the first single from her upcoming album, MDNA. It’s catchy and everything, but to call other pop singers “Reductive” and then release Mickey all over again just feels a little… what’s the word I’m searching for?

No matter, because I’m currently fist-pumping to Madge’s new jam, “Girl Gone Wild.” It’s pretty straight forward Pop, which is my favorite kind. It sounds like they hired a Madonna robot to sing the track, but it works. Does this mean we’ll never be rid of Madonna, because she’s actually an android super-human who has been sent to force-feed us ridiculously catchy dance music for all time? I’m fine with that; I’m a gay gone wild over here.

We have yet to see a proper music video for the song, so for now, we have a sexy Madonna photo montage with lyrics. She’s no Faulkner, but we came to dance.

I don’t mind it so much. I mean, it’s not my usual style (I prefer the harder rock personally), but considering I’ve already pre-ordered the album, I have no problem keeping it on hand for when I need some Madge to cheer me up.

Okay, here’s the thing: I have loved Madonna since I first saw the video for “Burning Up” which I still consider one of her best singles. I stuck it out through the “SEX” book which was so NOT erotic. Ironically the album, “Erotica” was waaay sexier than that stupid book. I loved the Earth Mother Madonna when she put out “Ray of Light” and “Music.” “Bedtime Stories” is one of her finest albums. But, oy! How much can a woman take, already? “Girl?” Really? Love you Madge but this is not your best work. Turned the song off after the first 15 seconds.

It sounds like a demo. The production values are just… not there. Just some tweaks, backing vocals, and depth in some of the verses and rifts would propel this to a kick ass track. Instead, it sounds like a britney spears b-side…. wtf madge? Where is the perfectionist diva I love?

So if you write a song about being a “girl gone wild” then you should have a looser production. Maybe more throb in that bass, some dirty guitar, and vocals that sound like a human. This sounds manufactured, and has no lyrical references to the kinds of things that actual “girls gone wild” do today. “Girls just want…to have some fun.” Um, are we really cribbing off Cyndi Lauper still? Yikes. Sorry, but Ke$ha and Rihanna have the market cornered on being convincingly naughty in their dance pop–Ke$ha aurally, and Rihanna visually.
