Facebook To Make Changes To ‘Fa**ot’ and ‘Sissy’ Ad Targeting Software

We won't be hitting the 'like' button on this one.

Facebook is in the hot seat because of software which allows companies to target users based on a keyword system. The software itself isn’t the problem, rather some of the keywords being used to identify members of the target market.

Music blogger Darren Hemmings of Music Ally recently checked out the system and was amazed at some keyword suggestions generated by the software. The word in question was that dirty ‘f word’, y’know the one that toothless hillbillies love to use to describe gay people. Hemmings decided to dig a bit deeper, adding the naughty word to his keyword list, which suggested adding the equally offensive words ‘sissy’, ‘slut’ and the ‘C U Next Tuesday’ word.

Members of the LGBTQ community are not the only ones vulnerable to insult with the software. The ‘N word’ as well as a variety of other dirty words for Jewish and Asian people were included as acceptable search target terms.

A spokesperson for Facebook has said that the company is looking into adding these offensive terms to their blacklist of acceptable search terms.

Do you want companies targeting products to you based on offensive/discriminating words?
