Utah’s New Sex-Ed Bill Missing The Sex (And The Gay)

Dear Utah, your rock formations look like sex organs.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert will have a bill sitting on his desk today which would make the teaching of contraception in prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy illegal. In addition, any mention of homosexuality would also be banned by this bill.

Herbert has yet to take a stance on this issue but it is assumed he will sign it into law this week. The bill would be the only one in the nation which outlaws the mere discussion of contraceptive.

And thus continues the assault on women’s rights to contraceptive and sexual health. This is getting ridiculous people. Are we on a one way trip back to the dark ages? Will be soon be adopting the ‘women are vessels’ mentality again? I’m mortified.

People honestly scare me. It’s like these guys want teenage pregnancies!

Did you know that The Netherlands and Germany have some of the lowest teen pregnancy rates
in the world?
They teach sex ed by telling kids the truth, and by putting teenage girls on birth control by age 14.
And yet…
In Bible belt, we know how they “teach” sex ed, and they have the highest teen pregnancy rate in America!
What does that tell you?

That tells you that teenage girls are stupid and need to stop getting knocked up. I hate when people blame the high teenage pregnancy rates on lack of contraception or inefficiency Sex-Ed programs . Teenagers aren’t stupid, they know, if they have sex their is a chance they can get pregnant. Blame the kids who decide to put out at a young age when they can’t handle the responsibilities that come with it. Now obviously this doesn’t apply to special cases like rape, but besides that, if you are a teenager and you get pregnant, its because you choose to have sex. Not because the state didn’t tell you how to use birth control or allow you to use it.

Not to mention the fact that the Bible states that sex should happen between two people who are married. So you can’t blame the religion for kids getting knocked up because these kids are obviously going against their own religion to have sex. So what makes you think they are going to listen to a sex-ed teacher?

not all of the students in those schools are religious. the fact of the matter is that people are going to have sex. and, yes, that includes unmarried adults and teenagers. it is a personal choice to have sex, yes, and if people are uneducated about the ways they can have sex safely, then it is more likely that there will be an increase in teen pregnancies.

if students are taught about the different contraceptives and given demonstrations about how they are properly used, it is more likely they will be using contraceptives. in every school where this is taught, abstinence is also part of the curriculum, being shown to be the only one hundred percent effective way to avoid pregnancy and sti’s. there is also a clause that if a student feels uncomfortable talking about sex or contraception they may opt out of that part of the curriculum and rely on what their religion teaches them.

just as it’s not right to assume that all lgbt people are alike, it’s not right to assume that all “religious” people are alike. there are religious people who are lgbt and lgbt friendly and there are those that are not. in the same way, there are religious people who will have sex outside of marriage and those who will not.

it doesn’t hurt the people who choose not to use contraception to have it available and be educated about it. it is, however, harmful to not have contraception available and not educate those who would use it.

There are so many misconceptions about sex among teenagers and even some of the adults I’ve met. Things I’ve heard from more than one person: “It was the first time, so we didn’t need to use birth control.” “He just stuck it in for a second.” “So, I’ll be extra safe by doubling up right?” Let’s not forget those people who still think that having sex standing up is a form contraception and don’t get me started on cola contraceptive. And let us not forget the “rhythm” method.

Knowledge is power, this is something I believe with every fiber of my being. Sweeping sex under the rug and pretending it’s not something that needs to be discussed helps no one.

I never once suggested that it shouldn’t be talked about. I am saying, that the blame for high teen pregnancy rates lies with the teenagers who are choosing to have sex, not the so called “lack” of information.

Mr. Harris, it seems like you have a Christian standard for judging the actions of kids, which states that sex is for marriage. Part of any competent, useful sex education program like the ones employed by the Netherlands, Iceland, Germany etc. is to ignore the unrealistic expectation that preaching will stop teenagers from trying sex. When the sex education program assumes that the kids will be human and hormonal instead of a static ideal and teach them how to be safer in sex and to do it correctly and recognize what’s really happening to their bodies: Magic! They do far better than teenagers in bible states. Although the responsibility for pregnancies falls to the teens who had sex, you can’t point to a widely different probability and claim that these programs are ineffective. Mathematically, the numbers state it clearly. Christian agency funded abstinence programs don’t work, teaching teens about sex as though its something they need to know (which it is) is far more efficacious.

You guys (Americans) need to fight these lowlife morons with all your might! It’s scary even for us Europeans to watch how America has to deal with this utter nonsense. I truly hope you’ll be able to get religion out of politics once and for all very soon! I know there are more intelligent people in America, than there are morons. It’s just hard to see it sometimes. RAGE HARD!

So theoretically, if our government was unwilling (or “unable” as they put it) to ignore the possibility of terrorist attacks, then they would be even less inclined to ignore the dangers of risky sexual behaviors. It’s Utah… aside from a handful of people, it’s only a bunch of inbred mormons that live there that believe getting knocked up is their birthright.

Bars aren’t legal there either… or really even alcohol service. Even in “private clubs” they can only serve you half a shot… and the beer is brewed specially for the state and is just a tad more potent than non-alcoholic beer.

Now, if they erected a fence around the state and bubble to keep them in, that would be better.
