GOP Rep. Introduces Bill to Impeach President Obama

The American political crazy train chugs ten miles closer to Insanityville today with news that Republicans have introduced a bill to impeach President Barack Obama.

Republican Representative Walter B. Jones Jr. has come up with the resolution demanding Obama’s impeachment in case his administration starts another military action without the approval of Congress. This came as a reaction to the American Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announcing that in order to carry out the offensive, the US military needs permission from the UN and NATO alone.

Jones’s resolution states that the prime authority to rule on the attack is the US Congress, but not international bodies be it NATO or UN.

Rep. Jones isn’t the only Republican sipping the purple Kool-aid.

“I am all for having international support, but I am really baffled by the idea that somehow an international assembly provides a legal basis for the United States military to be deployed in combat,” Rep. Jeff Sessions said. “They can provide no legal authority. The only legal authority that is required to deploy the United States military is of the Congress and the president and the law and the constitution.”

Joe Jervis points out that military action has been taken by the United States without prior approval of Congress at least 125 times before without threats of impeachment.

I’d love to dismiss this strategy as nonsense, but this may be the only viable way of getting Mitt Romney or any of the other Republican joke candidates into office. I wouldn’t put anything past the GOP at this point.

Wait, so not being a Democrat automatically makes you a Republican? Did you forget there are other political parties? I don’t particularly like either of them very much. I’m a Libertarian myself. People need to start thinking outside the “D/R” box.

So pick another one! It doesn’t really matter what your political party is. We really need to get over the labels and place people in office based on facts and figures, not political party.

Actually Sarah, It DOES matter what political party you belong to. The label of that political party says a lot about you personally and it’s part of the facts and figures calculation a voter uses to ascertain whether they will elect you to office or not.

So for the foreseeable future, party label matters.

They couldn’t impeach him but Obama would have 90 days to conduct a campaign before legally requiring congressional approval for it to continue. Failing to gain it and continuing use of military force is at that point a criminal act and grounds for impeachment and possibly criminal charges. HOWEVER, most members of the President’s staff have stated they don’t want to get involved in Syria since there is no organized rebellion, we don’t know who leads the various groups or what their motivations are.

It’s not because he waged war, it’s because he did it without Congressional approval. Only Congress has the constitutional right to declare war. Rep. Jones Jr. found a loophole to get him out of office. The executive powers have been growing exponentially since F.D.R.’s administration and Mr. Obama currently has a House Majority that is dissatisfied with him. Thankfully the Bi-Partisanship in Congress (is for once something to be thankful for) will likely kill this bill from reaching fruition.

Jeff Sessions is dead on accurate. Impeachment is a strong word, but if Obama and Paneta think that they only have to answer to the UN or other FORIEGN bodies and. It our Constitution, then start those proceedings!

Well I think that is just action due to the fact that they are correct; Congress needs to approve of military deployment and attacks on other countries. Personally I dont think that we need to be just going in and attacking other countries without approval it is law and in the Constitution. Attacking other countries for a stronger foot hold in your seat is asking for punishment. We have a system in place and votes need to be taken before the President Democrat or Republican decide to wage war on other countries. We are terrorist at this point to these people no wonder they hate us.

The president is allowed to have troops out for.. I think its like either 45 or 125 days without approval of congress but then must withdraw before that time if he doesn’t get it. The cycle can be repeated however.

I feel like I have spent my adult life living in a constant ‘undeclared war’ against someone. If I did not know this was a purely political move, I would almost be in favor of limiting the powers to declare war. The problem with military action is that once you start shooting, it is hard to stop and then you have ‘war’.

Congress is, constitutionally speaking, the body that has the power to declare war. However, the War Powers Act gives the president the power to send troops out for some odd 60 days before requiring renewal from congress. Congress has the power to kill the war by cutting off funding if that was really their wish. I don’t think they really have a case to impeach Obama. I mean Bush is the one who went to war and did he ask Congress? No. There was no official Congress approval of the Iraq war, which has turned out to be the longest and most financially costly war in US history. This impeachment proposition is rather absurd and just a desperate attempt by outraged politicians who are not thinking clearly.
