Marvel Comics’ Gay Young Avengers FINALLY Share First Kiss

Marvel Comics’ characters Wiccan and Hulking have finally kissed within the pages of the publisher’s Young Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #9 in a full page spread sure to elicit oohs and awws.

The characters originally made their debut in 2005′s Young Avengers #1 masquerading as the teen sidekicks of established heroes Thor and Hulk. Wiccan (Flash fact!) first went by the codename Asgardian, but switched early on due to concern that a gay hero named Ass-guardian was a PR nightmare waiting to happen.

The two teen boys have been in a monogamous relationship since their debut, but under superstar writer Allan Heinberg (The OC, Grey’s Anatomy) managed to avoid on-panel smooching until this week, without anyone really seeming to notice that a smooch had yet to happen. All of this is testament to the gay writer’s skill and dedication to fleshing out two of Marvel’s most headline-grabbing characters.

Hot on the heels of Archie Comics’ Kevin Keller’s same-sex, interracial military wedding, the Young Avengers kiss marks another hit in a string of gay comics milestones.

If you’re not following these characters in their various series or maybe just have never even read a comic book before, Young Avengers Vol. 1: Sidekicks is a fantastic place to start.

One Million Moms is so gonna explode over this. Not that I care because if they spent as much time doing God’s work with the homeless, the hungry, and those in need rather than being the morality police and telling people what they should and should not being doing then they may actually make a difference.

YA is one of the best comics Marvel is doing right now, that and Runaways who have a lesbian with an effectively genderqueer partner (ze is from an alien shapeshifting race). I’ve mostly given up on most other Marvel books as the storylines get too convoluted to follow picking up the occasional book.
