Ruben Lack: Presidential material

Alpharetta High School Student Body President Rueben Lack was removed from his position after daring to suggest that his LGBT peers be treated equally at homecoming this year.

Unfortunately for Lack, Georgia don’t play dat.

Reuben Lack, who was elected student body president by his classmates, first made the proposal to modify AHS’s “Prom King and Queen” tradition to include gay and lesbian students at a student council meeting on Jan. 12, according to the complaint filed by his attorney, James Radford.

When the student council sponsor told them to stop discussion about the idea, Lack moved to table it so they could return to the idea at a later meeting. He renewed his proposal at the Jan. 26 meeting, and the sponsor again objected and said there would be no vote on it.

Lack says on Feb. 8 the student council sponsors told him he was being removed as student body president.

Now Lack is suing his school for, in our opinion, a pretty clear violation of his First Amendment rights. He’s not suing for monetary damages, he just wants to be reinstated in the office he loves so much!

What justification was there to remove him in the first place?

Can you please stop accusing entire states of homophobia? Just because some people are ignorant doesn’t mean the entire state of Georgia (or Alaska or Arkansas) is like that. As someone who was born and raised in Georgia I can assure you that there are plenty of us who aren’t bothered one bit by homosexuality.

I agree with you darling. It is much easier to blame something like ‘Georgia’ than it is to articulate what and why we are upset and what should be done. I am pretty sure most people know in their heart that a whole state/community cannot be blamed for the actions of hateful people (the exist everywhere). I’d love to spend some time in Savannah and know a lot of LGBT and LGBT friendly people from Georgia.

I’m sorry, but I was raised in the south and yeah, yeah, the whole state’s not homophobic, any more than all of New England is gay friendly, however, there are empirical measures, like how people vote and the rights extended citizens of a given area and Georgia (or anywhere in the south for that matter) is not leading the way.

Regardless of anyone views on gays or school systems this is WRONG!

For MANY reasons INCLUDING the fact this goes against his freedoms and the freedoms of the LGBT at his school. This is America and regardless of your feelings whats right is right and this is not right. His freedoms and LGBT’s freedoms mean just as much as any other student at that school’s freedoms.

I am the Student Vice President of a New Zealand University, and no one here would ever dare to try and interfere with student politics. We, as elected officers, hold the power to sway decisions without any ‘sponsors’ telling us what we can and cannot do. Coincidentally, I am also gay, and our university has a thriving LGBT culture, supported by students, staff and management alike. Even our Christian movement are in favour of LGBT rights.

Sigh, I’d like to say how the media is giving false information in the first place. This article is flawed in the first fact that the proposal was from prom, not homecoming. Secondly, he was not removed because of this proposition.
Finally, I was to say that Prom king and queen are voted on by the students as one boy and one girl regardless of sexuality. It is a question of gender not sexuality. There’s nothing saying that a gay person cannot win his or her gender. If there were two boys or girls however, one gender would not be included which is unfair.
