He Shoots, He Scores, He Shouts Gay Slurs at Young Boys
Am I terrible for thinking this homophobe is kind of cute?
There’s not a lot worse than finding out that your childhood hero is a complete skeez.
But a ball boy for the Seattle Sounders soccer team found that out when Houston Dynamo Midfielder Colin Clark called him a “faggot” when he didn’t return the ball fast enough.
Tossing around “faggot” is inexcusable in my eyes, but for a professional sports player to yell it at a teenager brings Clark’s act to whole new level of fuckery.
Clark tweeted three separate apologies after the 2-0 loss (poetic justice?) to Seattle.
While Clark’s apologies seem sincere, I’m still a little bitter that there are young soccer players across the country looking up to him.
The English Premier League fined one of its soccer players $62,000 last year for yelling racial slurs at an opponent. Here’s to hoping Major League Soccer (MLS) here in the U.S. follows suit. The Houston Dynamo is washing its hands of their responsibility for Clark and letting MLS investigate and consider “disciplinary action.”
Here’s me going on record saying that holding Clark out of a few games and giving him a quick slap on the wrist isn’t enough. MLS should use this opportunity to show that homophobic and other prejudice acts by its players aren’t tolerated.
Maybe Clark hasn’t seen this video? What do you think? Is a “heat of the moment excuse” an excuse at all? Are Clark’s apologies sincere? Should the MLS keep him?
