It’s Important to File Your Taxes Accurately, Unless You’re Gay

When filing your taxes reminds you of Old Dirty Bastard lyrics, you know something’s wrong.

Baby I Got Your Money….

The federal government holds no secrets about its disdain for our fabulousness, but when it comes to taxes, they’re actually making us lie about who we are…. so that we… don’t exist?

We told you last year that LGBT families can miss out on more than $6,000 in tax breaks every year simply for being gay.

Since the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) doesn’t recognize gay marriages on the national level, even for couples living in states that do, LGBT married couples are forced to file their taxes individually, essentially lying about their marital status.

And as more gay couples marry and more states legalize marriage, the amount of accurate-but-inaccurate tax returns filed is going up as well.

Married same-sex couples cannot file jointly, and instead must misrepresent themselves as “single” on their federal tax forms, sacrificing the $1,000 deduction for married couple.

Unequal Taxation Undue Burdens for Lgbt Families

The federal government offers numerous tax breaks for married couples, particularly those with children. The discriminatory and, dare I say, unconstitutional ramifications of DOMA negatively affect LGBT couples as well as their children.

‘Scuse me?! This report only further highlights the urgent need to repeal DOMA.

What’s the biggest reason you want DOMA repealed? Let us know in the comments.
