Mom Lisa Skidmore on her daughter’s accident in class, “Poop. Diarrhea poop. Coming out the back, up the front, down her leg.”

“This was the top story on the 6 o’clock news about a girl who had poop, diarrhea poop coming out of her pants.”

You’ll get over your giggles really quickly after making it all the way through the video. This poor little girl!

OK, so you won’t get over your giggles at all. You’ll laugh. Fine. We’re all terrible jerks for laughing.

But it is still very, very, very sad indeed. A few questions spring to mind; Why did the mother go straight to the news with this and agree to use her real name (outing her daughter)? Why is this the top news story of the day on this station? Are the Ozarks really hurting this badly for content?

And where do you draw the accountability line? Is this teacher absolutely terrible for not realizing the extent of her student’s duress? Or does that fact that 6-year-olds still sometimes have accidents warrant any consideration?

The entire incident and the subsequent media tailspin are messy situations, in more ways than one.

What do you think about all of this (Besides we’re the worst and terrible and blah blah blah for bringing this story to your attention, that is.)

Funny? Yeah, as a mother of 2 little girls, this is anything but. That is horrifying! To be honest, not only would I be pushing for the school to rethink how they handle things, but I’d be pressing criminal charges as well. It’s INHUMANE to let a child sit in a classroom in their filth like that! It just makes me ill to think that a school would do such a thing! My oldest has had accidents in school, they took her to the nurse’s office right away and called me up with a request for a change of clothes. They didn’t just let her go about the day in her mess! There was a time when I “Liked” UB because they offered news stories that actually mattered and I wasn’t able to find on my own. But the content they seem to be pushing lately is just sad and pathetic, not to mention insensitive and downright assholish. You know, I’ve said the same basic things – and the UB guys have replied to my comments saying something akin to “If you don’t like it, you can just leave” … considering the former quality of news they used to have (cos I get notified on FB), I think a LOT of people have mentioned the downturn in “real news stories” on the site.

people can search their own names and the names of people they know, i do it all the time. not to mention all of the ways people connect to each other and information, with things like facebook and google. i wouldn’t be surprised if a classmate dredged this up in the future. and that’s even if they let her forget it- kids have a way of remembering the most inane things about each other.

all im saying- just because she may not be old enough to suffer the consequences of these adults’ poor judgement, doesn’t mean that she won’t later. and either way, it doesn’t make these peoples’ actions any less wrong.

This 6-year old girl was forced to sit for over half an hour in her own poo? That’s not funny in the least – and the parents make an excellent point. Had they done this to their daughter, protective services would be knocking on their door; this is probably one of those traumatizing events that’ll be branded in her mind the rest of her life.

I do not think this is funny. I didn’t giggle once during the whole thing. This is horrible and humiliating. Had you actually shown some sensitivity to this subject things might be different, but its not. You were joining along in the laughs. You should be ashamed of yourself. Shoot… something like this happened to me when I was around her age. I said I had to go to the bathroom and the teacher didn’t let me. Needless to say, I wasn’t lying. That didn’t make me giggle at all. The school and the teacher should be held responsible – screw the “stringent rules she will face later”, she’s SIX! And now the poor thing is going to be known for the rest of her school career as the girl who pooped her pants.

For one, I agree that pulling more attention to this poor little girl is wrong. Secondly, according to the health department, teachers are not allowed to clean up a child that has had an accident for their own safety. Fecal matter can carry all sorts of diseases and germs, and they are not allowed, much less qualified, to deal with it themselves. Being 6 years old, the mother should have sent extra clothes with her just in case an incident like this happened. I have two young daughters, one in second grade and one in first grade, and I still send them to school with an extra uniform just in case. Yes, it was kind of bad that the school gave the girl a trash bag to wrap around herself, but honestly the mother should have let her be more prepared, especially considering it would take her 20mins to drive to the school. Accidents happen, and it’s not the school’s fault she didn’t have extra clothes.

An incident like this happened when I was helping my mother at a day school for kids. The nurse had no problem helping the student clean up. The boy was given an old pair of gym shorts while the nurse gave him privacy to remove his own soiled pants and change himself. She placed the dirty pants in a bag while wearing gloves and sent them home with his mother when she came to pick him up. There are ways of helping a child who has soiled themselves without putting yourself at risk of a biohazard. If not the teacher’s responsibility, they should have at least sent her to the nurse. There was no reason whatsoever for what that school did.

Did you watch the video or read any of the stories? The teacher tried to get her to go before the test started, and the girl didn’t. I know you can’t force a child to go, but to allow every child to get up whenever they feel the urge would disrupt class and as there was a test being taken, I could see them not wanting any disruptions.

I never said the school was right in giving her a trash bag. They should have gotten some lost and found clothes at least, but at the same time the mother isn’t completely blameless either. One of the responsibilities of being a parent is to be prepared for accidents, and this mother wasn’t. At the beginning of the year for any school I’ve ever seen, they request that the parents of younger children send extra clothes for the child in case there is an accident. This mother didn’t. She knew she would have to drive 20mins to get to the school, and didn’t prepare for any accident situations.

Both the school and the mother didn’t do the proper preparations to take care of a situation like this, so neither party is completely blameless. But at the same time, neither party can take the entire blame. Think logically instead of going on nothing but emotions, and you can probably see where I’m coming from. If not, I’m sorry you don’t understand it.

Yes dear, I watched the videos and read the story. Going on nothing but emotions? Way to just arrogantly dismiss my point as just being nothing but emotional rhetoric. What would have been logical was to get the child OUT of the classroom after she soiled herself and done something about it PERIOD. Her mother may not have packed her daughter extra clothes, but that is honestly a lame excuse to place blame on her.

The child didn’t go the first time when they asked her to, so what? Even you agreed you can’t make a child go. You just can’t control when you have to use the bathroom, it happens when it happens. As for you saying you could see how the teacher did not want any disruptions, really? How on earth is it disruptive to let the child go to restroom if she is on the verge of messing herself? These are kindergarteners, they aren’t taking the SATs.

Besides, I’m pretty sure her soiling herself in the classroom while they were taking a test caused a MUCH bigger disruption than if they would have just let her go in the first place. I’m just going to agree to disagree with you here. I see the point you’re trying to make but I don’t agree with it whatsoever.

I didn’t laugh because I don’t think it’s funny. I think the parents had every right to go to the media, because obviously the school wasn’t listening. It’s crazy to subject little children – six year olds, for heavens sake - to this type of stress. What was the teacher and the school thinking of? And how much more demeaning to make her sit in her poop until her mother came? If this changes this type of thinking in schools, so no more little children have this happen to them, I say good on the parents. They have accomplished something. But what does it say overall about the quality of not just teachers, but how highly we value standardized tests, that this could happen to a defenseless six year old? I think the parents should sue and then put the child in private school. This school obviously should be closed down, because if this is the tip of the iceberg of what they practice, it’s an unhealthy environment for all the students.
