Rachel Maddow Explains Why Ex-Gay Apology Destroys Prop 8′s Standing

Rachel Maddow is hot on Unicorn Booty’s biggest story of the week, Dr. Robert Spitzer’s recanting of the entire Ex-Gay Therapy study and apology for essentially making the entire thing up.

Always one to connect the dots, Maddow and Kenji Yoshino hop right into the beef; The argument to ban same-sex marriage in California stood largely on evidence that LGBT people could switch their sexual orientation at will, and marry opposite-sex partners.

Dr. Spitzer’s landmark Ex-Gay Therapy study is quoted over and over again in the Prop 8 case. But now that Spitzer has admitted he made the whole thing up, shouldn’t the entire Prop 8 case be invalidated?

While I firmly believe that I and most self-identified gay people had little to no say in the matter of our sexual orientation the question as to whether or not we chose to be gay should not have any bearing on who we can or cannot marry. My choice as to who I build my life with should be mine and my partner’s alone and should have nothing to do with whether or not I “chose” to be gay.

I believe people are born gay. But, it really irritates me that it even matters. I personally think that we should be able to marry who we want even if it IS a choice. As long as the person is a citizen, of age, a human being, consenting, etc… it really shouldn’t matter if it is a choice or not. I understand that this argument is crucial to us now, but I hope we move past having to prove our genetics and simply be aloud to be whole persons.
