Tom Gabel, Lead Singer of Against Me! Comes Out as Transgender
“And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman. My mother once told me she would have named me Laura. I’d grow up to be strong and beautiful like her…” These are lyrics from “The Ocean,” the closing track off of Against Me!’s fourth studio album and major label debut, 2007′s New Wave.
Throughout the album, lead singer Tom Gabel speaks of a life in transition, battling personal demons and the frustrations of life as a forward-thinking musician in the Bush economy. It sounds like a record one would write on their journey to the majors, but the overall theme of growth and transition runs deeper. New Wave reminds me that sometimes, the most radical thing you can do is simply be true to yourself.
Gabel has announced plans to live openly as a woman, taking the name Laura Jane Grace. After dealing with issues of gender dysphoria, Grace will soon begin hormone therapy and electrolysis treatments. Grace will also remain married to her wife, Heather, who is in full support.
The full story appears in this month’s issue of Rolling Stone. As a long-time Against Me! fan, I would like to thank Laura Jane Grace for her courage. Congratulations, and best of luck on your journey!
