North Carolina Lesbian Denied Marriage License, Arrested
Last week nine gay and lesbian couples protested the passing of North Carolina’s Amendment 1 by filing for marriage licenses. All 9 couples, many of whom brought their children, had their applications denied. Mary Jamis, 52, was upset after being denied a license to marry her partner Starr Johnson and along with another protester, was arrested after refusing to leave the office until her application was approved.
Jamis and the other couples are members of the Campaign for Southern Equality which staged similar protests in last year. The campaigns planned similar protests all over the state in the coming weeks.
What do you think about protests? While nobody is expecting to get a marriage license, do you think it would be better to simply sit quietly and accept the new amendment without protest?
