Trayvon Martin Gun Range Targets Now For Sale. Why Is This a Thing That Exists?

Today in Aren’t People Just the Absolute Worst?:

ORLANDO, Fla. – An unidentified entrepreneur admits he is trying to profit off Trayvon Martin’s death by selling gun range targets featuring the teen who’s death has sparked a nationwide controversy.

Although Martin’s face does not appear on the paper targets, they feature a hoodie with crosshairs aimed at the chest. A bag of Skittles is tucked in the pocket and a hand is holding a can resembling iced tea.

Martin purchased both items minutes before he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in February, according to police.

FYI, the original run sold out in less than two days. So gross. So, so gross.

Why is this a thing that exists? And who are the people buying this?

I exists because people will do anything for a buck…and racist gun nuts know they have a devoted niche market. This may, however, be criminal and there is a petition online to put pressure on the Virginia AG to investigate. It probably won’t bear fruit, but it may be worth the trouble. They are using Trayvon’s likeness in order to make a quick buck from a national controversy. Yes, that is illegal and can be justified in court. I assume you don’t live in the United States since you said,”Sorry you live in a free country.” Since you don’t, why would you have any authority to speak on our country and our laws?

Let’s suppose this was your child who was killed and some a-hole for exploitation purposes, used your child’s image to make a profit. Freedom is a responsibility, not a get out of jail free card to expand on racists views. My immediate gut response to the image was to wear it in solidarity with Trayvon Martin, not as an act of racism. How is this racist when you are memorializing Martin with the hoodie and bringing attention to the issue by wearing it. In a consumer society about all the power I have is where to spend. If the money went to a memorial fund in Martin’s name, all the better, but let’s not get too starry-eyed.

I’m surprised that anyone would be surprised that this is for sale; unless of course you are not from the US. Let’s face it, this stuff exists in the US because we are a culture without conscience.
