Priest Refuses to Bury Body of 74-Year-Old Lesbian

Stay ~~classy~~ callous, cruel, cold – pretty much any of the terrible C words, really – Christians.

After the 74-year-old died, her 80-year-old partner, with whom she had lived in a registered partnership for twenty years, and daughter approached the church to bury her.

The vicar said he had decided to refuse Ms Østergaard’s mother a funeral because he did not want to perform gay wedding ceremonies and thought he should not therefore perform other church services for gays.

Kirsten Østergaard told DR1: “I thought – can this really be possible that we have to be ashamed? I looked at my mother’s partner and she was silent. I was upset for her. What a terrible situation to put her in.”

The vicar in question apologized to the daughter of the woman who was refused a burial service only after the complaints began pouring into the church, and admits that this was the biggest mistake he’s ever made.

Kirsten, to her credit, is having none of it. “What use is that to me? This is about his views about humanity, and I don’t think those have changed. He has probably regretted it, but not because of us – rather because he has put himself in a very bad light.”

Guess he forgot when Jesus told the story of the sheeps… he took some to one side and told you this to me when hungry, ill, and in prison, they ask when do we do that, He tells them when they did that to another and welcome them into heaven. To the others, you refused to those things for me, and they oh geez if we knew that was you we would have your back… that group was shown their way to hell. So Vivcar, it’s not that you put yourself in a bad light, more that you stepped out the light and fail you final exam.

Sad when those who read the Bible find everything that wrong with the GLBT but fail to see that they have a choice to love rather than hate and yet they continue to choose hate. Sad indeed. Hypocrite here’s your ticket train for hell is boarding.

But don’t paint all Christians with the homophobic brush – many of us, maybe most, are compassionate, loving, accepting, as is Christ. Most of us seek and practice connection and understanding.

Then you need to speak up much with greater opposition to such travesties than you have in the past. People like the vicar have hijacked your religion, and a meek apology doesn’t even begin to undo the damage caused by a hateful agent of intolerance like him. Moderate and gay-accepting Christians absolutely must become more visible in the public arena when this sort of shit comes to light. Remember: your actions will speak much louder than mere words.

I’m glad, that I have absent myself from the Danish “public” church. I do not want to pay the priest wages through the church tax. So rather give my money to animal protection organizations
