Tyler Clementi’s Roommate, Tormentor Sentenced to Only 30 Days in Jail

Dharun Ravi and Tyler Clementi

What do Dharun Ravi and Lindsay Lohan have in common?

They’ve both been sentenced to 30 days in jail. Lohan received her sentence for a string of probation violations capped off with a DUI charge, while Ravi is credited with cyberbullying his college roommate Tyler Clementi to death.

So you know, same thing.

(CBS/AP) NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – A judge sentenced former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi today to 30 days in jail for using a webcam to spy on his roommate’s intimate encounter with another man.

Judge Glen Berman told Ravi to report to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional facility on May 31.

Ravi, 20, was convicted in March of 15 criminal counts, including bias intimidation and invasion of privacy, for using his webcam to view his 18- year-old roommate Tyler Clementi kissing another man in September 2010. Clementi committed suicide just days after the online peeping and quickly became a symbol of plight of gay youth in America.

A number of LGBT public figures spoke out in a New York Times article this weekend against Ravi being served with the maximum sentence – in this case, 10 years of jail and then deportment – for his crimes. Dan Savage in particular was quoted as saying,“The rush to pin all the responsibility on Ravi and then wash our hands and walk away means we’re not going to learn the lessons of these kids.”

I can’t help but wonder what sort of lesson anyone paying attention to this case has learned. Besides of course that it’s OK to bully gay kids to death.
